Industrial process monitoring

About

Results-driven Analytical Chemist with hands-on experience in sugar manufacturing, laboratory analysis, quality control, and industrial process monitoring. Skilled in conducting chemical analyses of raw materials, process intermediates, utilities, and finished products using titrimetric, gravimetric, and instrumental techniques. Experienced in sugar process analysis, including Brix, Pol, purity, ICUMSA colour, and moisture determination, as well as boiler water, condensate, DM water, and wastewater analysis.

Proficient in QA/QC procedures, data recording, laboratory equipment operation, and process optimization while ensuring compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), HACCP principles, food safety requirements, and environmental regulations. Adept at interpreting analytical results, supporting operational efficiency, and maintaining high standards of accuracy, safety, and quality in fast-paced industrial laboratory environments.

Experience

Laboratory Chemist at Angata Sugar Mills Ltd. (2026-01 – Present)

  • Conduct routine chemical analysis across the sugar manufacturing process, including primary juice, mixed juice, last mill juice, syrup, molasses, massecuite, and finished sugar using Brix, Pol, purity, moisture, and ICUMSA quality parameters.
  • Perform quality control testing on raw materials, process intermediates, and finished products using titrimetric, gravimetric, and instrumental analytical techniques to ensure compliance with industry quality standards.
  • Monitor milling and extraction efficiency through Preparation Index (PI), Bagasse Moisture Testing (BMT), and Brix curve analysis, supporting process optimization and sugar recovery improvement.
  • Perform routine analysis of boiler feed water, condensate, DM plant water, cooling systems, and wastewater, including pH, conductivity, chloride, silica, BOD, and COD determination to ensure process efficiency and environmental compliance.
  • Calibrate, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment while adhering to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), HACCP requirements, laboratory safety procedures, and environmental regulations.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, monitor critical operational parameters, prepare analytical reports, and collaborate with production and quality teams to support data-driven process control and continuous improvement initiatives.

Student Attaché at South Nyanza Sugar Company (2024-09 – 2024-11)

  • Observed and documented the complete production lifecycle, from processing lines to Quality Control (QC) labs and final warehousing, establishing a holistic understanding of industrial processes.
  • Conducted specialized water analysis for critical plant utilities, including the Water Treatment Plant, Waste Water Management facility, and Boiler Water Deionization Plant.
  • Measured pH, turbidity, temperature, and chloride levels in plant water.
  • Analysed wastewater for BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand).
  • Ensured product quality by performing QA testing on intermediate and final products using established laboratory techniques (titration, gravimetry, UV-Vis spectrophotometry).
  • Analysed Brix and Pol levels in cane juice and syrup to monitor sugar concentration and purity.
  • Maintained process integrity by continuously monitoring and meticulously recording critical parameters (temperature, pressure, flow rates) to ensure production standards were met.
  • Supported NEMA and food safety compliance by assisting in effluent analysis and plant monitoring, ensuring adherence to environmental and HACCP standards.
  • Enhanced operational flow by strictly adhering to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), managing minor equipment troubleshooting, and maintaining laboratory safety protocols.
