I joined the bank as a Management Trainee in Aug 2005. I went through various sections before being assigned as the officer in charge of Trade
Finance at the Bank, a position I held for 8 years. I was able to oversee:
Determination and approval of LCs and other trade Finance facilities in liaison with Credit Department. Advising on rules and procedures and regulations of different products.
Negotiation with customers for various trade financing products and advising on the best options, Implications, regulations and rules of letters of credit,
guarantees and documentary collection and attending to their queries.
Ensuring that all bank regulations are adhered to, especially CBK Regulations,
AML laws in processing of different Trade Finance products.
I oversaw management of trade finance products mainly Letters of credit,
Guarantees, bills for collection, Bill discounting and foreign cheque negotiation. Ensuring that documentation is in order and that terms and conditions are adhered to. Advising on the rules governing the various products.
I ensured adherence to international Trade Finance regulations, laws and procedures, mainly UCP 600 for LCs, URDG 758 for guarantees, URC 458 and
Incoterm 2010.
Sourcing of new business and on boarding new customers for Trade Finance products.
I have attended various courses on Trade Finance which have improved my knowledge.
I also have good knowledge of Business Law from my background which has come handy in discharge of my duties.
At the moment I am still working very closely with our Trade finance team giving advise every often.
During my time in Trade Finance I introduced bill discounting together with the Credit Manager. This enhanced business and improved profitability.
I monitored closely and ensured that commissions are collected accurately.
Those customers who brought huge business volumes were rewarded by offering discount e.g. instead of LC opening commission of 0.5% they were offered 0.25%.
Trade Finance business grew considerably from an average of 20 LCs to 40
LCs Per day.
Currently I have good knowledge concerning AML and KYC. In April this year I was able to attend a seminar at KSMS that was organized by FRC for Branch
Managers concerning AML AND KYC. We learnt more on how to conduct KYC for various kinds of customers be it on boarding of new customers or dealing with existing customers. This plus my knowledge of business law will be handy in discharging my duties.
My knowledge and training on people skills will also be a good weapon for handling customers and stakeholders.
