Communications attaché - Make Me Smile organization Kenya - Kisumu, Kenya

During my attachment period which was from the month of January -March 2024 at Make Me Smile Kenya under USAID 4TheChild organization as a communication attaché, I learnt a lot and gain enough experience as a communications student.

• Perfected my interpersonal skills having it being a community based organization.
• I also learnt how to persevere and work under hard work conditions as I could be going to far end places of the region that was Kisumu East, west and central for various projects documentation.
• I was assigned to videography, photography, documentation, reporting and covering success stories of both the OVC and DREAMS beneficiaries.
• Conducted field documentation across Kisumu East, West and Central supporting project visibility and outreach.
• Engaged communities professionally hence strengthening interpersonal and beneficiary interaction skills.
• Created visual and written content through photography, videography, reporting and success stories.
• Supported documentation of OVC and DREAMS beneficiaries for organizational reporting and marketing.
• And I worked under minimal supervision, demonstrating reliability, flexibility and strong work ethic.

Communication and advocacy volunteer - Tuelimishe Vijana Community Based organization - Kisumu, Kenya

Working as the communications and advocacy personnel at the organization, I was entitled with the following duties.

• Managing the social media accounts of the organization.
• Creating weekly newsletters for the organization.
• Writing weekly reports on the activities taking place within the organization.
• Writing press releases and documenting organization's activities through taking photographs and editing them and doing videography for the socials.
• Counselling and educating the girls on peer education and self hygiene and on the importance of education under the project 'Keep a girl in school'.
• Documented programs through photography, videography and editing for online promotion.
• Conducted peer education sessions and school outreach, strengthening presentation and persuasion skills.
• Supported community engagement initiatives aimed at youth empowerment.

Information officer volunteer - The Kenya News Agency - Kisumu, Kenya

After my attachment at the Make Me Smile organization, I later went to work as a volunteer with the Kenya News Agency as a press and information volunteer for a period of one year. Working with the Kenya News Agency as an information volunteer it gained me more experience in.

• Photography, writing news stories, covering and doing feature stories, editing of news articles and photos.
• Covered news stories, feature stories and live reporting assignments.
• Produced and edited news articles and photographs for publication.
• I also strengthened my professional writing, communication and information dissemination skills.
• Worked in a fast-paced media environment.

Media production and a mentorship trainee - Alphanex Media Kenya - Kenya

I underwent a mentorship program with Alphanex Media Kenya in broadcast production, scripting, videography, photography, marketing and front office management.

• I acquired hands experience in managing the social media platforms of a company and organization, through posting and marketing the organization by posting engaging content to help grow audience engagement.
• I did on air presentation through streaming live, scripting and studio coordination.

I worked as a brand ambassador for eTIMS activation systems in kisumu that helped me gain experience in branding and marketing.

• Creating public awareness about eTIMS and what eTIMS is and it's importantance.
• Educate businesses on how to use eTIMS while issuing invoices.
• Break down complex tax concepts into simple language that can be understood by a common mwanachi.
• Encourage businesses especially at the petrol stations to adopt eTIMS and follow tax regulations.
• Promoting transparency in transactions hence reducing tax evasions.
• Assist traders and business owners to register and use eTIMS.
• Maintain positive image of KRA while implementing the eTIMS system to the public.
• Wri feedfeedback reports everyday regarding users opinions and the challenges that was encountoured during the activation.
• Conduct basic training on how to identify eTIMS recept after purchase and it's difference from the ETR receipts.

Shamiri institute fellow - Shamiri institute - Kenya

I have worked as a fellow with the shamiri institute where we advocate for mental health and wellness amongst high school students.

• Attending weekly sessions at schools where I have to take the students through mental health related topics that would help them improve their academic performances as well as their mental wellness.
• Creates a safe space and a friendly environment for the students where they can express themselves openly and honestly hence assuring them of confidentiality.
• Doing session reports and uploading the student's data in the Shamiri Digital Hub (SDH) and marking the students session attendance and evaluating the student's session performance.
• Escalating sensible issues regarding triage and students at risk to the supervisors then later to the psychologists for more help. And if at risk to get an immediate help.
• Doing the surveys and questionnaires for the students at the begining of the session and after all the sessions to see their progress in terms of academic and mental health and if they have benefited from the sessions.
