Tom Okaya

Education expert with more than 29 years experience which include classroom teachers, pedagogic advisor, education manager and research. I am holder of PhD in Education from Australian Catholic University, Melbourne, Australia, Master of Education Research and Evaluation, CUEA, and Bachelors of Education, Egerton. In addition, I have attended short professional courses STEM Education in USA, Japan, Australia, Israel among others.

Currently, I am an Assistant Director in-charge of Teachers Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD), Teacher Professional Development (TPD), Alternative Curriculum Delivery Programs and Teacher Innovations at the Teachers Service Commission. My roles involve providing professional support and advising the Commission on the implementation of these programs in all learning institutions and Teacher Training Colleges in Kenya. I am a member of the multi-agency team for the implementation of the new Competency-Based Curriculum and Assessment (CBC/CBA).

• Assistant Deputy Director, Quality Assurance and Standard Officer Teachers Service Commission (TSC) (2020 – date)
• Lead Co-Applicant: Prior Exposure to Engineering through Invention Education, EXPLORE Café and Pre-College Session Grant from the Royal Academy of Engineering, United Kingdom (2020 to date)
• Lead Convener, Kenya National STEM Learning Ecosystem (2020 to date)
• TSC Sub-County Director, Kangema Sub-County, Murang’a County, Kenya. My role included overseeing and providing support to teachers as they implement the curriculum (2019-2020)
• National STEM Coordinator, Trainer & Pedagogic Advisor for Physics, The Centre Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA). CEMASTEA is part of the Ministry of Education in-charge of Continuous Teacher Capacity Development for Science and mathematics teachers in Kenya (2016-2019)

Recipient of the 2015 Outstanding Dissertation Award by International Alliance for Invitational Education During the 33rd World Conference on Invitational Education held in Long Island, New York, United States of America Skills (2010-2015)
