Wambulwa Benard

Benard is an Infectious Disease Pharmacist and Public Health Practitioner with over 10 years working experience in the health sector in Kenya.

1. Guided the development of the Kakamega County Hospital Empiric Antimicrobial Use Guideline and protocols first edition,2018
2. Led the AMS Team in review and drafting of the Second edition of the Kakamega County Empiric Antimicrobial Use Guideline and Protocol 2022
3. Guided the development of the Kakamega County Hospital cumulative antibiogram and AMS policy in July 2022
4. Participating in the HAI surveillance work at the Maternity department-CS Surgical Site Infections surveillance at Kakamega County Hospital
5. Successfully guided as the principal investigator (PI) and Co-PI phase one of the AMR surveillance and AMR Capacity Building projects respectively at the Kakamega County Hospital. The projects are supported by Pfizer (USA) and Wellcome Trust(UK). The AMR surveillance project focuses on the first five (5) WHO Priority Pathogens.
6. Participated in the review of the second Kenya National Action Plan (NAP 2023- 2027) on containment of AMR together with the national AMR TWG / National Inter-Agency Committee.
7. Spearheaded the development of the AMR documentary targeting patients and the general public -the documentary can be viewed at different waiting bays in Kakamegahospitals, local TV Stations and in social media. I also appear in local FM Radio stations creatingawareness about AMR with special focuson one Health and the need for multisectoral collaborations to Combat AMR.
8. Resource mobilized to successfully celebrate the WAAW 2022 in Kakamega County bringing together all the stakeholders as per the One Health Approach-WAAW- World Antimicrobial Awareness Week running from 18th to 24thNovember 2022
9. Successfully guided three capacity building trainings on IPC care Bundles and Rational Antimicrobial use targeting healthcare workers in 5 hospitals in KakamegaCounty.

I have been Practicing as a Pharmacist with both County and National governments, then transitioning to being a Member of the Kakamega County Health Management Team. He is a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) and the Hospital Pharmacists Association of Kenya-HOPAK. I have interests in Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) Research and AMR containment. Am the Antimicrobial Stewardship Champion in Kakamega County.
