About Our Team:

Elsevier Clinical Solutions builds and operates software that supports healthcare professionals with evidence‑based tools and insights. This role is part of the foundation of Elsevier’s Technology Hub in Mexico City and represents one of the first two engineering managers establishing the local management layer.

You will lead teams working closely with product, project, and architecture partners, as well as offshore development teams, to deliver scalable, reliable, and high‑quality software solutions.

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Manager, Software Engineering to provide leadership, direction, and technical vision across software development teams supporting Clinical Solutions. This role combines people leadership, technical expertise, and delivery ownership, ensuring the successful execution of software initiatives across the full development lifecycle.

You will be responsible for managing engineers and contractors, guiding technical decisions, ensuring delivery excellence, and reporting progress to senior leadership. In addition, you will help identify and develop talent, define resource strategies, and contribute to budget and capacity planning.

Responsibilities:

Leadership & People Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop software engineers, offshore contractors, consultants, and interns.

  • Manage performance, hiring, onboarding, feedback, and career development.

  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, continuous improvement, and inclusion.

  • Ensure teams have the training, tools, and resources needed to succeed.

Technical & Delivery Ownership

  • Provide technical leadership and act as a senior point of expertise across development initiatives.

  • Lead architecture and design discussions for complex, large‑scale systems.

  • Ensure adherence to enterprise architecture, development standards, and best practices.

  • Write and review complex, advanced code when needed.

  • Oversee system, integration, and user acceptance testing cycles to ensure high‑quality outcomes.

  • Serve as a primary technical point of contact for internal and external technology partners.

Strategy, Planning & Collaboration

  • Partner closely with product, project, and engineering peers to plan and deliver software components.

  • Manage project scope, timelines, budgets, and resource allocation using established tools and methodologies.

  • Recommend technical strategies and contribute to the evolution of platform architecture.

  • Communicate progress, risks, and outcomes clearly to senior and executive management.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders and customers to address system issues and identify alternative solutions when needed.

Requirements:

Experience & Education

  • 10+ years of professional software development experience.

  • 2+ years of people management experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience (advanced degree preferred).

Technical Expertise
  • Strong experience with large, complex software systems and enterprise‑scale architectures.

  • Proficiency across multiple development languages and platforms, including (but not limited to):

    Java/J2EE, JavaScript, C/C++, HTML, XML, SQL, .NET, Windows, UNIX.

  • Deep knowledge of database technologies, data modeling, optimization, and performance tuning.

  • Experience with test‑driven development, code reviews, and modern SDLC practices.

  • Expertise in Agile and/or Waterfall methodologies.

  • Strong understanding of offshore delivery models, managed services, and staff augmentation.

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, development tooling, and project management platforms.

Leadership & Communication

  • Proven ability to lead cross‑functional and offshore teams effectively.

  • Strong budgeting, planning, and financial management skills.

  • Advanced problem‑solving and decision‑making capabilities.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage technical and non‑technical audiences, including senior leadership.
