I have a minimum of 14 years of teaching experience in KS3 Science which follows the National Curriculum for England, and in Biology for IGCSE, A Levels and IBDP. I possess a Bachelor’s in Bioindustry from Malaysia, a PhD in Science from Monash University and a Cambridge International Diploma for Teachers and Trainers (CIDTT).
Throughout my extensive teaching career, I mainly use the 5E's lesson structure as a guide, emphasizing the initiation of curiosity to spark independent exploration, leading to the development and evaluation of scientific concepts. My teaching approach incorporates hands-on learning, utilizing modeling, simulations, experiments, and online exploration. I continually refine my teaching and learning strategies by staying informed through publications from educational leaders like Tom Sherrington, Guy Claxton, Ann Tomlinson, and Dylan William.
Therefore, my are also developed to incorporate Rosenshine’s Principals, learning power approaches, differentiation and apply assessments for learning. In this, I have found that digital educational applications such as Pear Deck, Kahoot, Educake, KAMI, Edpuzzle, Quizlet and many more, have been very effective in ensuring 100% class participation, tracking progress and giving targeted feedback.
I also believe strongly that students learn the necessary knowledge, skills and ability to apply through the cultivation of the life-long learning characteristics. Besides using differentiated ways of interacting with the learning content, addressing the learning characteristics has been especially effective in building the confidence of students with English as a Second Language.
As a teacher, I believe that is it also important to cultivate the values of a global citizen in my students and so as part of the evaluation section of the lesson, students discuss about the impact of human decisions and activities on societies, the economy and the environment, which is also aligned with the school’s vision. Therefore, students are stretched through a wider application of the concept learned, on strengthening one aspect of their learning characteristics, and on evaluating one aspect current development in science as a global citizen.
