Senior year thesis at Department of Biochemistry, LASU (2026-05 – 2026-07)
Principal Investigator: Prof. M.I. Kazeem. Research Topic: Inhibitory Properties Of Citrus sinensis juice bioactive compounds on the activities of neurological related enzymes - An in-silico study
- Collected fresh sweet oranges and extracted juice by manual squeezing
- Identified nine bioactive compounds from the juice sample through GC-MS analysis
- Retrieved the 3-dimensional structures of the 9 compounds from PUBCHEM database, converted the retrieved structures to the PDB format and retrieved the 3-dimensional structures of the target enzymes (AChE, BChE, MAO, DDC and BACE1) from Protein Data Bank (PDB)
- Performed the molecular docking using AutoDock tools and visualized using BIOVIA
- Discovered that all nine compounds identified showed favourable binding across all targets, with 4-acetamido-2-cyclohexenone being the most pharmacologically relevant
Undergraduate Group Research Project at Department of Biochemistry, Lagos State University (LASU) (2026-02 – 2026-06)
Principal Investigator: Prof M.I. Kazeem. Research Topic: Evaluation of the Effects of Citrus sinensis (Orange) Peel on Neurological-Related Enzyme Activities Using Drosophila melanogaster as a Model Organism
- Collaborated in a team to design and execute an in-vivo study assessing the effect of Citrus sinensis peel on neurological-enzyme-related activity using Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism
- Bred and maintained Drosophila populations under controlled laboratory conditions for experimental use
- Assisted in the design and execution of enzyme activity assays to evaluate the biochemical effects of orange juice and peel extracts on the flies
- Contributed to data collection, analysis, and interpretation of results within a team setting, and participated in group discussions to compare findings against existing literature
