Assistant Tax Manager at Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) – MEDLOG (Present)
My role as an Assistant Tax Manager for Medlog Transport and Logistics Services Limited (i.e part of the MSC group) are as follows:
- Preparation, assessment and filing of monthly indirect taxes (e.g VAT & WHT) and annual Income Tax Returns (CIT) on the FIRS Taxpro-Max platform.
- Assessment of the company's sales invoices and purchase invoices to determine the tax implications as well as providing a tax advice on these invoices through a software (i.e Precoro).
- Preparing and advising on month-end tax liabilities on the monthly financial reports of the company as well as posting on the company's ERP (i.e SAP).
- Conducting monthly & quarterly tax health-check on the books of the company in order to determine the tax compliance of the company with tax laws and regulations.
- Sensitizing the Account Receivables (AR), Account Payables (AP) and the Procurement team on tax matters as it affects their daily activities.
- Preparing a constructive representation to FIRS and SIRS queries (i.e desk reviews & tax audits) and liaise with the relevant tax authorities on tax issues concerning the company.
- Processing the company's TCC annually which are granted by the FIRS.
- Attend to tax issues raised by vendors and customers as well as liaise with the group company's finance team outside Nigeria.
- Represents the company during tax assessment and audit reconciliations with the tax authorities.
- Filing of Country-by-Country Report (CbCR) Article 3 notification on the new FIRS AEOI platform.
- Review and filing of Transfer Pricing notification on FIRS portal.
Tax Professional at W.A. Kareem & Co. (Chartered Accountants)
- Preparation, review and filing of Tax and Capital Allowance Computation of various companies in the Telecommunication Industry, Manufacturing, Rental/Real Estate Industry, Banking and Other Financial Institutions.
- Completion of Desk review and Tax Audit Exercises with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and State Internal Revenue Board (SIRB) oversee by Managing Partner.
- Conducts research on tax regimes in local and other tax jurisdictions in which client's operation.
- Assessment and analysis of various tax types such as CIT, VAT, WHT, PIT etc.
- Filing of tax returns on the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) TaxPro-max platform as well as State Internal Revenue Service (SIRS) monthly and annual filing of taxes and levies.
- Timely processing of Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) from the FIRS.
- Prepares tax provisions using technical skills to accurately complete calculations and follow Firm policies.
- Researches and prepares draft client reports under the guidance of senior and project management.
- Researches tax authority audit/appeals process and prepares draft reports to be presented before the tax authorities in tax audits/administrative appeals.
- Helps clients mitigate risk, meet compliance obligations and statuary deadlines, and realize business goals.
- Applies laws effectively in compliance matters, and identifies further opportunities when undertaking client work.
- Prepares basic tax returns and refunds by referencing tax implications, opportunities, and their optimization on various tax types such as Companies Income Tax (CIT), Personal Income Tax (PIT), Value-Added Tax (VAT), Withholding Tax (WHT) and so on.
- Establishes relationships with tax authorities and learns the local tax organizational structure, responsibilities, rights and obligations of taxpayers and tax authorities.
- Represent companies in Desk Reviews and Tax Audit Reconciliation Committee (TARC) with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and various State Internal Revenue Board (SIRB) through presentation of a detailed correspondence to the reports/assessments raised by the tax administrators.
- Preparation of Personal Income Tax assessment and Staff Payroll.
Presiding/Adhoc Officer at Independent National Electoral Commission
My experience/achievement as a presiding/ad hoc officer for INEC are:
- A team leader who ensure the presence and punctuality of all the subordinates electoral officers at the polling unit which allow us(the team) to start accreditation at the official stated time.
- I was able to create a calm and serene atmosphere both for we the electoral officials and the electorate establishing a good interpersonal relationship between the ad hoc staffs and the voters through an effective and sound communication before the commencement of the election.
- I was able to achieve smooth and efficient running of the electoral processes through supervision of every officer and his designated work.
- There was no record of argument, disagreement and violence or any therein due to the fact that we strictly followed the due protocols of INEC in the accreditation processes and complains of the voters were duly attend to with a win-win solution.
- Handling and keeping of Sensitive materials such as the result sheets (Form E8, E18 etc) and Non-sensitive materials such as the cubicle and so on as well as taking records of all the designated materials so as to ensure the process to be accurate and effective and to avoid mismanagement of material and results padding or conspiracy.
- Distribution of designated sensitive and Non-sensitive materials to the electoral officials.
- Collation of results at the polling unit was successful due to the fact that the electoral process was fair and just, which also allowed the agents of various parties come into consensus that the process was fair and just by duly signing on result sheet.
