The role: Lead Java Developer Utrecht
As Lead Java Developer, you'll join the team building a completely new messaging hub for
all messaging that leaves and enters the platform
, tens of millions of messages in total. Think of machine-to-machine traffic between systems, but also communication that ultimately reaches the customers of our customers. All of this needs to run
supersecure
.
The challenge lies, as elsewhere in the organisation, in
scale and abstraction
. There are countless different types of messages and communication flows, and the art is to build
one generic architecture and solution
for this, so you never have to build custom work case by case.
As the team's technical figurehead, you're the
primary point of contact for your team members
on technical matters. You'll also
work closely with tech leads from other teams, staff engineers and architects
to help shape the platform's technical direction.
The organisation is also exploring how AI can play a role in making the platform smarter
, for example in modelling complex product logic and supporting decision-making. This is still in an exploratory phase, leaving room for you to help shape it.

What is required?
- Completed Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or similar
- Minimum
7 years of professional experience
as a Software Engineer
- Experience with
Java 21 or higher is a strong plus
- Experience with
technical leadership
or mentoring engineers
- Experience with system design is a strong plus
- Experience with
Spring Boot or Quarkus
is a plus
- Experience with
microservices architectures
- Experience with Elasticsearch is a plus
- Experience with Kafka and event-driven architectures is a plus
- Experience with
cloud (AWS and/or Azure)
is a plus
