About the role
ING is transforming into a high-performing IT organization with a strong Software Craftsmanship culture. For our Mortgages domain, we are looking for a Data Engineer with a strong Oracle RDBMS background to join our DevOps team in Amsterdam.
This role is not a typical Java engineering position. We are specifically looking for someone who is deeply experienced in Oracle databases, SQL/PLSQL, and Linux, with Java as a supporting skill rather than the primary focus.
You will work in a backend, data-focused DevOps team, responsible for enabling the exchange and availability of mortgage data through APIs and handling data flows that are not purely cloud-native.
Work environment
You will join a multidisciplinary, end-to-end DevOps team at ING in Amsterdam. The team values direct communication, ownership, and a pragmatic approach to solving data challenges.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate a datastore supporting mortgage data exchange
- Develop and maintain Oracle RDBMS solutions (SQL, PL/SQL)
- Support backend services (Java as secondary skill)
- Enable data exchange via APIs for internal and external consumers
- Work on data integration and data quality (non cloud-first environments)
- Operate within a DevOps setup, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and incident handling
- Ensure compliance with IT Risk & Security controls and support audits
- Collaborate in an Agile/Scrum team
What we are really looking for
- Strong experience with Oracle RDBMS, SQL, and PL/SQL (this is the core of the role)
- Solid Linux skills (scripting, troubleshooting, operations)
- Experience in data engineering/data integration
- Java knowledge is helpful, but not the primary requirement
- Experience working in DevOps/backend data teams
- Comfortable working with APIs and backend data flows
- Agile/Scrum experience
- Strong analytical mindset and ability to handle complex systems
- Fluent in English
Important context
- This is a backend/data role, not frontend
- The work is not purely cloud-native, experience with more traditional data environments is important
- We are looking for a well-rounded engineer who can strengthen team capacity across data, database and operations
- ING experience is not required
Nice to have
- Kafka (Connect, Streams, Schema Registry)
- Kubernetes/Docker
- IT Risk & Security knowledge in banking
- CI/CD and automation (Azure DevOps, Ansible)
- Test automation
What we offer
- Competitive salary (ITSync scale 10)
- Contract: 1 June 2026 – 31 May 2027 (extension possible)
- 36 hours per week
- Hybrid working setup
- Strong learning and development opportunities
- Work on impactful financial data systems
