About this course

The course is for people preparing a survey brief before a crew enters the field. You will build a readiness checklist, confirm coordinate and control questions, check access and deliverables, and state what has and has not been measured. The field team gets a safer start and the office receives an honest handover. This module introduces the first working routine of a surveyor: turning a client brief into a safe, traceable and usable field plan. You will distinguish a boundary request from a topographic or construction-control task, confirm the coordinate and deliverable assumptions, prepare equipment and documents, and brief the crew before leaving the office. Before minute 5 you will produce a field-readiness checklist and a ready-to-use clarification sentence for a supervisor or client. This module takes a prepared brief into the field. You will plan a stable setup, distinguish total station and GNSS observations, maintain a control network, keep field notes that explain the data collector file, and recognise the conditions that require a resection, check shot, repeat occupation or escalation. The focus is operational: a junior surveyor should be able to set up methodically, communicate a discrepancy and leave another person enough evidence to reproduce the logic of the day. A field file becomes useful only when its reference, coding, completeness and quality are understood. This module follows observations into a controlled data workflow: copy and preserve originals, inspect codes and attributes, verify coordinate systems and units, build a point or linework dataset, compare the output with field notes and prepare a CAD or GIS handoff. You will practise identifying a transformation problem, repairing a missing attribute and explaining why visual alignment alone is not quality assurance. Field surveying places people and equipment near traffic, excavations, plant, unstable ground, water, weather and members of the public. This module builds a practical safety and communication routine without replacing the employer's risk assessment or site rules. You will read a method statement, set exclusion and observation positions, brief a crew, protect equipment and data in changing conditions, report a near miss, and explain when a measurement must pause because the environment or uncertainty has changed. The final stage of a surveying task is not the moment a drawing opens; it is the point at which the deliverable, evidence and limitations are understood by the person who will use it. This module builds a repeatable review and handoff routine. You will define acceptance checks, reconcile the brief with the output, communicate a discrepancy to a client or project manager, prepare interview evidence and plan your first thirty days in a survey or geomatics team. The result is a concise QA record and a truthful explanation of your competence.
