The Respiratory Therapist (RT's) involved in the care of the critically ill patients in the hospital who needs respiratory therapy. The Respiratory Therapist functions both the intensive care units and on the General hospital floors.
- Supervision and responsible to the Pulmonary Unit in the absence of the Chief Respiratory Therapist.
- Administration of aerosol or inhalation therapy
- Does chest-physiotherapy and postural drainage to patient if necessary
- Extract arterial blood samples for arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis
- Responds to whatever code the hospital assigns for stat ABG, assist in the intubation and manual resuscitation
- Assist in the ambulance conduction; provide proper settings for mechanical ventilator needed by the patient for his/her continuous ventilation.
- Monitors oxygen saturation of the patient
- Measures other lung volume parameters with the use of Pulmonary Function Test machine.
- Teaches/Instructs post-operative patients how to use the Incentive Spirometer to prevent lung atelectasis
- Educate and conducts other breathing exercises
- Does weaning to patients hooked to a mechanical ventilator by switching to a cylinder or pipe-in oxygen equipped with in-line nebulizer via t-piece
- Prepare equipment's, materials needed and assists in the Bronchoscope procedures. Performs tuberculin skin testing (Mantoux test)
- Care and maintenance of the equipment's like sterilization and proper disposal of infectious materials. (disposable 'tubing's, cascade humidifiers, filters)
- Complies in the infection control guidelines for the safety of our patients and all hospital personnel.
- Understands and adheres to policies and procedures of the hospital.
- Maintains adequate attendance and punctuality.
- Prepares timely, appropriate and accurate documentation in accordance with the accepted documentation standards.
- Participate in Continuing Professional Education and maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops and seminars.
- Perform all other tasks and duties as assigned by the Chief Respiratory Therapist.
