Bachelor of Science in Molecular and Cellular Biology, passionate about science and its relationship to well-being. Strong foundation in molecular and cellular biology techniques, including cell culture, Western Blot technique, tissue homogenization protein quantification and densitometry. Highly organized, curious, and with great perseverance.
Particularly interested in roles in the pharmaceutical industry that allow me to participate in practices, research, or laboratory operations and administration. Confident that I can be a valuable asset to the development, production, or analysis of pharmaceutical products.
Graduate Studies in Biology at University of Puerto Rico Intercampus Doctoral Program (2024-01 – Present)
Following graduation in December 2023, I was admitted to the Intercampus Doctoral Program leading to a Ph.D. in Biology with a concentration in Neurobiology. Conducted laboratory research as part of an internship, gaining experience in experimental techniques, data collection, and scientific research methodologies. Upon entering the Ph.D. graduate program with special permission, I began working with the N27A cell line as it would be my research topic with Dr.
Jorge in co-mentorship with Dr. Barreto, both from the Medical Sciences Campus. I have been working collaboratively on research on dopaminergic cells and metal contamination, such as lead. The project was in its early stages, and I had not yet fully transitioned into the specific topic that would have served as the basis for my doctoral dissertation. During my laboratory internship, I gained hands-on experience in neuronal cell culture techniques and other laboratory techniques.
Undergraduate Researcher at School of Medicine. Medical Sciences Campus. University of Puerto Rico (2023-01 – 2023-12)
In order to expand my scientific capabilities, I've worked and trained together with the "BDNF in opioid addiction" research group of Dr.
Barreto in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology of the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus. Her laboratory also investigates the cellular and behavioral changes in response to exposure to natural and synthetic androgens. Along with that, I observed and learned behavioral neuroscience laboratory procedures, expanding knowledge of experimental animal behavior protocols and research methodologies in studies of opioid addiction and neurobiology. This experience opened my eyes to the impact of opioid addiction, which drives an epidemic of accidental deaths in the United States and other places across the world. In addition, Dr. Barreto assigned me to work with the management and cell culture of dopaminergic cells such as N27-A and Sertoli ST38c cells. Male infertility rate has trend higher in the last century and exposure to heavy metals such as plumb and chrome can be very toxic and alter the physiology of Sertoli cells. Furthermore, I was beginning to be trained in the Western Blot technique and other abilities.
Applied and Industrial Microbiology student (professional practice) at Microbiology lab. University of Puerto Rico (2007-01 – 2007-12)
During two courses of Applied and Industrial Microbiology with the professor Miguel Urdaneta at the UPRRP I acquired skills and knowledge. The experiment with Clostridium botulinum spores was carried out to prove the survival of the endospore as a foodborne toxin under extreme conditions. This experience has also led me to appreciate the importance of studying microorganisms, especially after living through and witnessing the shocking transmission of the COVID-19 virus and its global impact.
