Changing Directions Purposefully

Changing Directions Purposefully

Changing Directions Purposefully

Ali Anani

A pendulum changes its swing direction

A river may change its flow direction

Wind changes its direction- The air flows cyclonically around low-pressure systems. If the wind changes direction in a cyclonic fashion it often means a low pressure or front is influencing the forecast area. Changing direction doesn’t have to be linear.

The roots of plants change their direction. This depends on many factors such as water availability, the texture of the soil and the availability of nutrients. Roots wave and skew when grown on an impassable area.

In todays’ business the growth of many companies passes through dry soils, areas with widely-compacted competition and lack of resources. Plants face same similar problems as businesses encounter today. Research has shown that the root morphologies of researched plants have changed from a random meandering (twisting) root path to a regular sinusoidal wave and, finally, to a normal gravity-aligned morphology. The external clues alert the roots to adapt with agility to the external environment.

Businesses today grow in environments like those that plants encounter. Strategist call for having a direction for a business and then making SMART objectives to reach the destination. This is only possible if the business grows in a stable environment. The wind of business may change its direction abruptly. The wind may be in the shape of a cyclone suggesting that it comes from a low pressure. The business “nutrients” might turn scarce and the landscape might be compacted with competition. Using Blue Ocean Strategy to walk out of competition is recommended. More appropriate shall be using disruptive creative ideas that disrupt the competition with new ideas and products that make the competition irrelevant. The urgent needs of the moment shall overweigh following strategic plans. It is alertness and agility to the surrounding conditions that shall make the business succeed and not adherence to the rocks of rigid plans. Reverse thinking shall be of utmost value in this regard to offset the effect of competition by turning the familiar and anticipated to unfamiliar and novel approaches. This is what Zipcar did. It changed the familiar process of car renting to a reversed process that resulted in making Zipcar the number one car rental company.

The soil of the business might be too harsh for a business to grow. The businesses could coil its branches or establish a sinusoidal arrangement of them. How to do this in a practical way? I believe that a business who can figure out a novel way of doing this shall be able to have the roots to grow and flourish.

Any idea how to accomplish this?

Thank you Franci🐝Eugenia Hoffman, beBee Brand Ambassador. In chaotic situation we need to move out by simplifying interaction rules so that we may enter into complex or simple zones. Your mother's wisdom is unbelievable and that is what helped you in life to deal with chaos.

I would be excited to see your presentation if it is available in some format i could understand. If you decide to post it somewhere after the presentation please alert me. This opportunity/outcome debate is displaying itself within identity groups and its opposition. The discussion is bringing forward a new role of leadership, that at first glance, will be challenging the opportunity model and insuring that leaders become more HR professionals rather than visionaries.

You are amazing Harvey Lloyd. You wrote "Should leaders lead by providing opportunity for success within their group or should they lead by specific outcome desires?" This is one of the three topics I am presenting next July in Istanbul to the conference on leadership. That you choose leading by opportunity and providing the environment for such opportunities to emerge is vital. I love your comment.

There seems to be an underground debate emerging in this idea. Its being framed as; Should leaders lead by providing opportunity for success within their group or should they lead by specific outcome desires? Leading opportunity exposure allows each in the group to participate with the opportunity to the degree they wish. Leading by outcome attempts to homogenise each person in the group to a minimum/standard outcome. As i understand the debate. Each poses its own issues and problems but the opportunity approach would present the group with freedom to choose, where it may become burdensome on the group if each is forced into a minimum standard through outcome. Given that each would accept different levels of participation, the opportunity approach would allow for unequal inputs to reach 100% of goal. The opposite is true of outcome. This is a recently exposed concept for me. Leadership is precarious at best these days as we navigate the regulatory fields of human resources. More and more i sense we are being forced into the outcome model as opposed to the opportunity model. Leaders who have taken on the role (and the pay) are easier to encumber with providing opportunity rather than forcing the leader to insure that each member of the group is participating in outcome equally. Stimulating discussion.

You inspire me with an idea from your comment addressed to Lisa Vanderburg makes so far buzzes on individual bees. Now, what would be interesting is to have interviews with two opposing characters (like Lisa with her chaotic turbulence and your orderly state). I am sure great new ideas shall emerge. No fair play, but with an eye to select a working idea, approach, methodology or process.

Absolutely. But you bring to the front a basic understanding of chaos and order. Within each we make choices. The larger question we must ask ourselves is does the choice extend or reduce the efforts towards order; or does it reduce order? I have found that good leaders can detach themselves from the material aspects of these choices and choose the best choice. In a lot of cases these choices are not good for them but serve the goals of the group. Those who see the world from materialism attempt to choose in the sense of fair play. Unfortunately fair play is in the eyes of the beholder, not the choice maker. You add some very dynamic extensions to a very, very conscious thought process. Although i enjoy your humility i would think it would be tough to sit across the table from you in opposition.

CityVP 🐝 Manjit- I paused and paused to think of what you wrote "We harden the arteries of our own imaginations". This is a great imagination and reinforces the value of what Einstein said about imagination " "Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution". We can't evolve without imagination. I even dare to say that we can't be "antifragile" as Nassim Taleb advocated without imagination. The value of the "roots of imagination" is tremendous. This is along enhancing the roots of innovation, as you Manjit mentioned in your comment. a great comment that is worthy of digesting.

Harvey Lloyd- great thinking and what you wrote here is a nugget of wisdom. I mean "But naturally we need to understand that chaos and order are the same coin just different sides. The nature of being in order would prescribe that we are moving to chaos". We can't have one without the other. If we look at the graph of how order emerges from chaos and how chaos results from order then the depth of your comment becomes evident. In complex system where chaos initiates we always notice short-lived organized strips of order.

CityVP Manjit

Most of our decisions are virtual today rather than physical. We harden the arteries of our own imaginations and therefore we concertize the symbolic - yet we are not encumbered by the physical manifestation that a tree has with its roots. We choose to keep reviving memories and to change directions purposefully, we need to understand that the physical roots we think we have created are as atomized as the thinking that has hardened those thoughts. In the rearrangement of these atoms we create new possibilities and from these new possibilities emerge new types of roots - and those roots are not the same as the root of trees but a significant value in the 21st Century, the roots of innovation. Imagining new roots are an altogether different mindset than physical roots that become obstacles rather than opportunities. Our roots are in the past, but our ability to change directions purposefully means the nature of roots is a disentanglement and reinvention of what a roots purpose is in present value context.

You remind me of the late great CEO Steve Jobs who said that business should tell the customer what he /she needs. This is a reverse thinking of the conventional thinking dear Tausif Mundrawala. Regarding making money your point is valid. If you visit the Balanced Scorecard you shall find that making profits is the end result of a complex process starting from learning to increase the capacity and creativity of a business. Then this may result in improving internal process which in turn brings more loyal and repeating customers. If this happens then profits are possible.

You nailed the existential part of nurture with your analysis. But naturally we need to understand that chaos and order are the same coin just different sides. The nature of being in order would prescribe that we are moving to chaos. Sometimes we catch it (or shown it:) others it is the law of unintended consequences come to play. Accepting this is "natural" keeps us from the existential outcomes you described. When i hear of the crisis as you described i can follow back to a point that order was loosing its grip and we fought for stability instead of riding the wave. I am always pushed back when someone like Starbucks listens to high paid PR firms in crisis when they should have known this chaos was coming. So i find the leadership wanting. Who in their right mind could watch any news and not expect chaos to visit. Well they will now deal with the fall out of more layers of unintended consequences. My thoughts lead me to corporate culture will be the first to be attacked internally. I am still reading and enjoying i have stepped back from my social media and miss the folks i have met. Life should be finding a little calmer pattern in the near future.

In your second paragraph Harvey Lloyd of this comment (so wonderful to just hang out with you agin BTW!), you suggest that leadership often becomes as flawed as its earnings. Like confidence in money-markets or currencies. Did I get that right? Numbskull here :)

Harvey Lloyd- I shall not argue with your logic. I mentioned before that success emerges from failure with persistence, unlearning and learning. That is why I strongly support your statement "enjoy the hunt not the accomplishment of success". With this frame of mind a leader may try and try again till success emerges. I am lecturing on leadership in a regional conference in Istanbul next July. I have prepared simulations to show what you reflected in your comment.

Irony is always a struggle. This is no less in leadership. We enter our thoughts and new beginnings in an effort to bring order to chaos. Once we are immersed we begin to fear the chaos that we originally saw opportunity. Irony. I am afraid that with success (which was on the other side of the chaos we sought to tame) the granting of certain social/professional privileges/blessings are now a part of the loss we feel within chaos. If i could only have a few words for the answer to your question, enjoy the hunt not the accomplishment of success. The hunt is what is engaging, produces courage and also allows for humanity. Success is most always something to defend. Giving way to the proverb; Unless you are the lead dog the view never changes. Defending something will always have you viewing the south end of a north bound jackass:)

Harvey Lloyd- you explained beautifully the new term "Chaordic Leadership". Leaders who may turn chaos into order and enjoy the great emerging opportunities. The increasing interconnections and associated feedback shall lead to an increasing tendency towards chaos. What many leaders do they tend to become managers and apply more control. They try to control the uncontrollable. They drive in sinking sand and still they think they may force their control on the car (organization). Honestly, your comment opens so many windows to rethink leadership. I am immersed in the depth of your comment.

Chaos theory is where the answers to your question lies. Often we have discussed the individual we call leader. Now you have turned to the existential thinking and choices. When revenue is good we sense order, but as we sense the topping chaos tends to show itself. Is this nature or nurture? How you answer this question will determine what report you will attack, revenues or expenses. All to often we bet the farm or build a fortress. Typically the answer is in between. This is where many of the character discussions we have had come into play. Self awareness allows us to have the courage to meet our chaos of opportunity. Success lies just on the other side of our fear. Great post and thoughts. Your question has filled libraries.

Ali, food for thought as always. In my view the critical factor is that all businesses are composed of people. Yes, environments change. Yes they may be confronted by unpredicted events. Yes there may be limited resources. But if there is a strong shared vision and a mission that is clear to every employee the life of the business will continue. Will it grow? Only if the longer view can be connected to ways to overcome current difficulties. it is the combining of all the employees wants. needs and desires that provides a growth impetus. A plant has a singular focus. A business is many individuals focused.

Excellent analogy Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee I agree that a business must be able to change and evolve "naturally" to the market environment around it, just like a tree root system, in order to survive and flourish. Absolutely concur with your sentiment of; "The urgent needs of the moment shall overweigh following strategic plans. It is alertness and agility to the surrounding conditions that shall make the business succeed and not adherence to the rocks of rigid plans." This is a great example of "Organic Management". Your question of "How to accomplish this?" does open the door for a very lengthy discussion so being as concise as possible I would list the following attributes; - adaptability - keeping one's mission statement/priority in mind, (in the restaurant business this would be "The customer is the #1 priority") - Karma rules, (as simple as this sounds I've found from experience that this concept has never steered me wrong) - Hard work ethic - working/living harmoniously with the environment around you There are many more but these are a few basics that keep the tree living and prospering Great article sir!

lovely buzz sir Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee! i wonder, in a frozen water bodies, apparently it looks like having no flow as no life it contains. some plants amazingly grow in rocks and their shoots are wonder to us too, and their strategy to survive and expressing their entity are equally appear as a static one. now their spiral motion having upward and downward direction state too! now, to scale their height and growth are difficult too, which are depending of the external conditions which too enabled them to express their inherent force to manifest. however, nice insight sir. enjoyed read and shared. thank you for the share.
