Back End Developer

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Back-End Developer (Java / Kotlin) to join our engineering engagement with Sky in Lisbon. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain high-throughput, mission-critical distributed systems that stream video and media content to millions of concurrent end-users while targeting five-nines (99.999%) platform availability.

Key Responsibilities

• High-Scale Platform Engineering: Architect and develop performant, reliable, and secure back-end services capable of streaming video content at mass consumer scale.
• Resilience & Availability: Implement system engineering best practices to guarantee ultra-high uptime (99.999% availability) and resilient microservices architectures.
• Full Lifecycle Delivery: Participate across all phases of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), including requirements analysis, system architecture, API implementation, testing, deployment, and operational monitoring.
• Continuous Integration & Delivery: Maintain and enhance automated CI/CD build and deployment pipelines targeting containerized cloud environments.
• Team Collaboration & Mentorship: Actively contribute within a self-regulated Agile team, conducting rigorous peer code reviews and mentoring junior/associate developers.
• Technology Innovation: Evaluate and introduce modern architectural patterns, tools, and frameworks to improve service efficiency and developer velocity.

Required Technical Skills & Qualifications

• Core Languages: 5–8 years of strong back-end development experience using Java or Kotlin.
• API Development: Extensive experience engineering scalable RESTful APIs, event-driven architectures, and microservices (self-hosted or application server frameworks).
• Containerization & Orchestration: Solid hands-on experience deploying and operating services with Docker and Kubernetes (K8s).
• Data Persistence: Proven experience designing and querying both Relational Databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL Datastores (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra, DynamoDB, Redis).
• Automated Testing & Performance Tooling: Practical experience with automated functional and load/performance testing suites (e.g., Cucumber, Gatling, JMeter).
• DevOps & CI/CD: Hands-on experience working with CI/CD platforms (e.g., GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, ArgoCD).
• Communication: Full professional proficiency in written and spoken English (essential for cross-border engineering collaboration).

Preferred / Nice-to-Have

• Prior experience in OTT, video-on-demand (VOD), live streaming, or digital media platforms.
• Experience with message brokers and event buses (e.g., Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Familiarity with observability and tracing tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, ELK stack).
