Job Description
We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join a data-driven technology team working in a demanding and evolving environment.
In this role, you will be responsible for designing, developing and maintaining scalable data solutions, transforming complex business requirements into robust data models and reliable data pipelines.
You will work extensively with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with a strong focus on BigQuery, developing efficient ETL/ELT processes, optimising data warehouse performance and applying business logic to make data reliable, accessible and ready for advanced analytics and AI use cases.
A key part of the role will be the development of a strong semantic layer, enabling business users to consume data independently and consistently. You will work with Looker and LookerML to define dimensions, measures and business logic, supporting self-service BI and ensuring a consistent understanding of business metrics across the organisation.
You will also collaborate closely with business and technical stakeholders, translating business questions into scalable data solutions, challenging incomplete or inconsistent requirements, and ensuring high standards of data quality, documentation and delivery.
Qualifications
Must-have
- Advanced SQL skills and strong experience with data transformation and data warehouse development
- Strong hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
- Advanced experience with BigQuery, including query optimisation, partitioning and performance optimisation
- Strong experience with Looker and LookerML, including the development and maintenance of semantic models
- Solid understanding of dimensional data modelling, including Star Schema and Snowflake Schema
- Experience designing and implementing ETL/ELT data pipelines
- Experience with Git and version control practices
- Strong understanding of data quality, validation and documentation
Nice-to-have
- Experience with dbt
- Knowledge of Python
- Experience with data orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow
- Experience with retail or e-commerce environments
- Google Cloud certifications
- Experience working with advanced analytics, AI or data products
Business & Analytical Skills
- Strong ability to understand business processes and translate them into data models, metrics and KPIs
- Proven experience working directly with business stakeholders, including Product, Finance and Operations teams
- Ability to challenge unclear, incomplete or inconsistent requirements
- Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset
- Focus on delivering reliable, high-quality data products that provide value to end users
- Ability to understand the wider business context behind data requirements
Experience
- 3–6 years of relevant experience in Data Engineering, Data or Business Intelligence
- Proven experience working in cloud-based data environments, particularly GCP
- Strong experience with BigQuery and modern cloud data architectures
- Experience gathering, analysing and refining requirements with business stakeholders
- Experience developing data models and semantic layers for analytics and self-service BI
- Experience with Looker / LookerML is highly valued
