Cai Tong graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2021, with an honor master’s degree in Architecture. Prior to joining HKS where she started her career, she had obtained internships in Kengo Kuma & Associates and Shigeru Ban in Tokyo and was involved in mainly museum projects. She also gained exposure to projects focusing on hospitality, high rise-residential and mixed-use sectors while working as an assistant designer at GMP and SCDA.
Since starting in HKS in 2021, she has already partici-pated in a wide range of healthcare projects, playing different roles such as medical planner, interior designer and architecture designer.
Her aspirations for architecture design are to look for a balance between architectural expression, practi-cal functionality, and innovation design. She believes in sustainable healthcare projects that can create a healthier society.
Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Charity Hospital (150 bed)| Dubai Healthcare City, UAE: Developed the masterplan for a 77,000 sqm comprehensive cancer care campus, as part of the Al Jalila Foundation’s initiative to establish the ‘Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Charity Hospital’ in Dubai.
Conducted space functional planning for the hospital with the capacity to treat 30,000 patients per year.
Developed a future-proofed medical planning typology that integrates pandemic-resilient strategies, and robotic and automation technologies. This typology is highly scaleable and could be applicable to other cancer facilities in the region.
Armed Forced Hospital (300-bed military general hospital) | Jazan, Saudi Arabia: Conducted needs assessments, designed facility layout and schematics, created end-to-end patient intake workflows, and devised strategy to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
Led quality-assurance discussions with various stakeholder groups, involving architects, engineers, doctors and policymakers, amd provided consultative services to healthcare system stakeholders.
Hong Kong Department of Healthcare Clinic Design Guidelines | Hongkong, China: Liaised with Hong Kong Department of Health and facilitated the publication of Clinic Design Guideline that uphold the quality of healthcare standards. The published guidelines now serves as an authoratative source of reference for healthcare facility management in Hong Kong.
Alameda Hospital (300-bed general hospital) | Cario, Egypt : Conducted site-specific macro analysis, strategic planning, and hospital benchmarking for the 50,000 sqm healthcare masterplan. Reviewed plans, blueprints, site layouts and specifications for overall quality assurance and project governance.
Proposed scalable masterplan options that met the current construction demand, and provided future roadmaps for the expansion of another 600 beds.
Conducted comprehensive phasing stuides and area and parking studies for the porject, assisting the clients in developing an effective timeline and cost plan.
