Ethos - Pathos - Logos

On the 24th we will delver into the arena of persuasion, something that one of our club members (Ivan) brought up in recent meetings, so we will be going Aristotelian for the midday meeting.  First we should review a video that introduces us to ethos, pathos and logos :

Ivan introduced ethos and logos as a Word of the Day, but because this communication is more complex than a Word of the Day, it makes sense to focus on this as a theme in itself for a club meeting.  Another brief summary of Aristotle's persuasive speech or deliberative rhetoric :

This puts us on a path towards a greater focus on critical thinking, and at our club these are three forms of thinking we want to begin to develop a.k.a.

CRITICAL THINKING

CREATIVE THINKING

REFLECTIVE THINKING

All three forms of thinking have various means of understanding and as we move towards a new program year for 2017/18 (beginning after 1st July 2017) hopefully now we have our Saturday program beginning to be a more established part of our program, we still have to get through the lean Summer months when the most loyal of club members and one's who are committed to developing and learning carry us through to the new college term that begins in September 2017.  Last year we managed to go through the entire summer without missing a meeting, and this year we are going to attempt to do that and hold bi-weekly meetings, that increases the challenge ahead regarding club engagement.

Critical Thinking provides a huge area of learning so we will try not to spread ourselves thin, so taking elements of persuasion at the most basic level, as we build faculties that bring awareness to all three types of thinking, but for now the immediate view will be both critical thinking and persuasive skills that include the logos of deliberative rhetoric.
