About this course
This course helps candidates and early-career nurses understand registered nursing. You will define the RN role, distinguish responsibilities from other clinicians, and connect behaviour with professional standards. At work, that supports safer delegation, clearer escalation and decisions within scope. This module clarifies what a Registered Nurse (RN) is authorized to do, where the boundaries of practice lie, and how professional standards translate into observable, day-to-day behaviors. You will learn to distinguish RN responsibilities from those of other care team members, interpret scope of practice rules, and recognize the standards that regulators and employers use to evaluate competent nursing work. This module gives you a reliable structure to plan, sequence, and adapt your shift as a registered nurse. You will learn how to build a shift brain sheet, triage competing demands, and stay in control when priorities shift unexpectedly. By the end, you will have a personal workflow template you can use from day one on the unit. This module builds the core communication and documentation habits every registered nurse relies on daily. You will learn how to structure verbal handoffs using SBAR, write accurate and legally sound nursing notes, and communicate clearly with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team. By the end, you will be able to deliver concise reports and produce documentation that supports safe, continuous care. This module equips you with practical tools to identify quality and safety risks in nursing practice, take proportionate action, and escalate concerns effectively. You will learn structured frameworks for recognising deteriorating patients, reporting incidents, and communicating up the chain of command. By the end, you will be able to apply escalation protocols confidently and contribute to a culture of safety on your ward. This capstone module puts the full registered nurse workflow into action through a realistic patient scenario. You will assess, prioritize, intervene, document, and produce an evidence-backed handoff using a structured communication framework. By the end, you will have practiced the entire cycle from bedside to shift change.
