Smith System Driver Improvement Institute, Inc.We're looking for an Analytics Engineer I to join our data team and work across the full data lifecycle—helping transform raw data into meaningful, reliable data models and dashboards that support insights around driver safety, training effectiveness, and fleet performance.
This is a hybrid analytics + data engineering role, blending foundational data engineering work with hands-on analytics. You'll spend time building and maintaining transformation layers, ensuring data reliability, and partnering with internal teams to answer product, business and research questions using data.
This role is designed as an entry-level position, with mentorship, documentation, and opportunities to grow deeper technical and business expertise over time.
Assemble, explore, clean, and structure raw data for analysis and reporting
Build and maintain data transformation models (e.g., dbt) that support analytics and dashboards
Create and optimize data models that power BI dashboards and internal reportingSupport the ingestion and analysis of telematics and fleet-related data, including:
Driver behavior events (hard braking, speeding, etc.)
Training completion and learning data
Work closely with analysts, product, and engineering teams to translate business questions into data solutions
Identify, flag, and help resolve data quality issues; assist in establishing data quality standards and documentation
Create and maintain documentation for data models, definitions, assumptions, and transformations
Support ad-hoc analytics requests from internal stakeholders and deliver accurate, timely insights
Write and maintain clean, performant SQL and Python code that aligns with team standards
Develop a strong understanding of fleet operations, driver safety concepts, and Smith System's products and customers
Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field such as Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, or a related discipline
Strong foundational SQL skills, including writing complex queries and understanding relational data models
Python experience for data manipulation, analysis, or automation
Experience with or strong interest in analytics engineering tools
Familiarity with data visualization or BI tools (Looker or Omni preferred)
Ability to analyze data, ask thoughtful questions, and understand the "why" behind trends—not just the numbers
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain insights to both technical and non-technical audiences
Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and work collaboratively in a team environmentThis role does not require prior professional analytics engineering experience at scale—relevant internships, coursework, bootcamps, or early-career experience are welcome.
