Job Title: App Dev - Java - Lead

Project Overview

Capital One is seeking backend engineers to join an existing One Pipeline – Release Decisioning platform. The enterprise platform validates compliance requirements before automated releases are opened. This is a brownfield application, and the selected engineers will enhance and re-architect existing services while collaborating with the current engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, enhance, and support enterprise backend applications.
• Work primarily with Java and Go, with an approximate 50/50 exposure depending on project needs.
• Contribute to modernization and re-architecture of existing applications.
• Develop scalable cloud-native services using AWS.
• Work with NoSQL databases and event-driven/cloud technologies.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and automated engineering workflows.
• Follow Agile development practices and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.
• Adopt modern AI-assisted development tools and intent-based development practices.
• Use tools such as Claude Code, Windsurf, or similar AI-assisted development platforms to improve engineering productivity.
• Participate in development, testing, troubleshooting, code reviews, and production support as needed.

Required Skills

• Strong Java backend development experience.
• Experience with Go/Golang or strong willingness and ability to learn Go.
• AWS experience, particularly:
  • AWS Lambda
  • DynamoDB
  • AWS Fargate
• Experience with NoSQL databases.
• Strong understanding of software architecture and backend design.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines.
• Agile development experience.
• Ability to work with existing/brownfield applications and contribute to modernization efforts.

AI / Modern Development Experience

Experience with AI-assisted development is an important part of the role. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to adopt modern AI tools and development strategies, such as:

• Claude Code
• Windsurf
• GitHub Copilot or similar tools
• Intent-based development
• AI-assisted coding, testing, documentation, or engineering workflows

Candidates do not need to be LLM developers or build AI models. The focus is on effectively adopting AI technologies as part of software development.

Previous Capital One experience is highly preferred.

• Experience working on enterprise-scale platforms.
• Experience with AI-assisted software development and modern engineering practices.
