About The Company

Ursa Major is working to revolutionize how the United States and its allies access and apply high-performance propulsion. The company designs, builds, and delivers propulsion and defense systems for national security missions, hypersonic capabilities, satellite maneuvering, solid rocket motors, and space access. By developing advanced technologies and offering an alternative to legacy systems, Ursa Major helps address urgent challenges across aerospace and defense.

Our mission depends on a motivated, collaborative team that takes on complex technical problems, supports one another, and continually looks for ways to grow. At Ursa Major, your work can help shape critical technologies while contributing to systems designed for demanding real-world applications.

About The Role

Ursa Major is seeking a Principal DevOps Engineer to provide technical leadership across platform engineering, infrastructure automation, and software delivery. In this role, you will architect and improve platforms serving cloud, on-premises, manufacturing, and test environments. You will partner across Software Engineering, IT, Networking, Digital Manufacturing, and Cybersecurity to make it easier for teams to design, test, and deliver mission-critical systems securely and reliably.

This position calls for an experienced technical leader who can turn complex, ambiguous challenges into clear architectures and practical solutions. You will influence standards and strategy, mentor engineers, and connect cloud environments with physical manufacturing equipment and test-bench hardware. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Qualifications

Candidates should have at least eight years of professional experience in DevOps, site reliability engineering, infrastructure engineering, or platform engineering, including a record of technical leadership and system architecture. Strong hands-on knowledge of Azure GovCloud and/or AWS GovCloud is required, including cloud networking, identity and access management, and security controls.

You should have advanced experience with Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, and GitOps or continuous delivery tools such as ArgoCD, Flux, or GitHub Actions. Experience designing highly available systems, disaster recovery, observability with Prometheus and Grafana, automated security scanning, and secrets management is important. Familiarity with deploying hosted AI models through production pipelines is also expected.

Preferred experience includes NIST SP 800-171 or CMMC Level 2, controlled unclassified information (CUI) data flows, policy-as-code, SBOM tools, Artifactory, SonarQube, OPA, or Kyverno. Experience supporting edge, shop-floor, or physical hardware environments using tools such as Ansible, Packer, K3s, or Rancher is an advantage. Candidates must be U.S. Persons and eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

Lead the design and ongoing improvement of platform infrastructure, deployment practices, and developer experience. Break down complex technical problems, document architecture decisions, and guide cross-functional teams through implementation. Promote consistent tools and reusable infrastructure patterns across software, IT, and networking teams.

Advance Infrastructure-as-Code and GitOps practices to support automated, reliable application lifecycles in Azure GovCloud and AWS GovCloud. Extend container orchestration to on-premises test benches, shop-floor computers, and edge manufacturing hardware. Design and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity capabilities, including automated backup and failover for critical systems.

Work with Cybersecurity and Zero-Trust teams to integrate vulnerability scanning, secrets management, and policy guardrails into CI/CD workflows. Support secure pipelines for hosted and private AI models, and maintain telemetry, metrics, and alerting that provide clear insight into application performance and pipeline health. Mentor engineers and make high-impact technical decisions with autonomy, sound judgment, and a focus on business outcomes.

Benefits The base salary range is $175,000–$215,000, depending on qualifications, experience, skills, and other relevant factors. Benefits include unlimited paid time off, paid parental and adoptive leave, medical, dental, and vision insurance, HSA/FSA options, employer-paid short- and long-term disability, basic life and AD&D coverage, voluntary benefit options, an employee assistance program, and a 401(k) plan with company match. Interns are not eligible for benefits.

Equal Opportunity

Ursa Major is an equal opportunity employer. Employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran status, or disability status. We encourage applicants to apply even if they do not meet every listed qualification. This role requires U.S. Person status and eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance. No outside recruiters, please.
