Job description

Company Description Tlon is focused on building a communication tool that emphasizes privacy, trust, and control for its users. The company’s work centers on Urbit, a fully encapsulated system that allows individuals to run personal servers in the cloud. Tlon’s initial product is a high-quality messenger designed for small, tightly knit groups, leveraging this unique infrastructure.

Over time, the company aims to evolve this messenger into a broader social operating system, offering a new way to interact and communicate online. Team members join a mission-driven environment that values technical innovation and secure, user-centric computing.

Role Description The DevOps Engineer role at Tlon is a full-time, remote position responsible for building, maintaining, and improving the infrastructure that powers Urbit-based communication tools. Day-to-day tasks include designing and managing cloud environments, implementing infrastructure as code, and maintaining reliable CI pipelines for development and deployment. The DevOps Engineer will monitor system performance, troubleshoot incidents, and optimize Linux-based systems for scalability, security, and availability.

This role collaborates closely with software developers to streamline releases, automate workflows, and ensure smooth integration between applications and infrastructure. The position also involves contributing to operational best practices, documentation, and tooling to support a distributed engineering team.

Qualifications

  • Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools and practices to design, provision, and manage cloud resources.
  • Proficiency in Software Development and Continuous Integration to automate builds, tests, and deployments.
  • Solid background in System Administration and Linux to manage servers, troubleshoot issues, and ensure system reliability.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, or similar) and containerization/orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) is highly beneficial.
  • Experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting tools to maintain observability and respond to incidents effectively.
  • Ability to write clear technical documentation and collaborate in a remote, distributed team environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience is preferred.
  • Interest in secure, user-owned computing and familiarity with Urbit or similar distributed systems is a plus.
