Role Summary The Wolfe Companies are seeking a DevOps Engineer to join a growing engineering team in Pittsburgh, PA. This position will participate and/or lead the design, maintenance, support, and reliability of mission-critical server infrastructure, including systems that will enable an upcoming robotic manufacturing facility. The role emphasizes cloud-native (AWS) and hybrid-cloud architecture, requiring strong experience supporting both cloud and on-premises environments.
This role plays a critical part in designing and implementing best-in-class DevOps solutions that drive operational excellence across the organization. The DevOps Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams—including Product, Development, QA, Security, AI, and IT—to ensure reliable, automated, secure, and scalable infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Participate and/or lead day‑to‑day operations with a focus on availability, resiliency, SRE practices, performance tuning, and capacity/cost optimization.
- Establish strong observability, incident response, and business continuity capabilities, including monitoring, alerting, backups, disaster recovery, and routine testing.
- Drive automation‑first operations using Infrastructure-as-Code (Iac), Ai, and configuration management (Terraform, Ansible/Puppet/Chef), scripting (Bash/Python), and CI/CD pipelines.
- Implement secure, compliant infrastructure and operational standards (IAM, encryption, network controls, PCI/SOC2), while contributing runbooks, on‑call support, and productivity‑enhancing tooling.
Impact Statement
For more clarity on the role, below are the success metrics and measurements for this role in the first 90 to 120 days.:
- Fulfill on-call responsibilities, consistently meeting or exceeding established Mean Time to Acknowledge (MTTA) and Mean Time to Resolve (MTTR) targets to ensure high service availability.
- Complete on-premises infrastructure training and actively participate in at least one scheduled server maintenance operation across manufacturing facilities.
- Develop a working knowledge of the existing AWS environment and contribute at least two meaningful pull requests to Terraform codebases, supporting infrastructure-as-code best practices.
- Engage in the work intake and prioritization process, reliably meeting SLAs for both work acknowledgement and completion to support team throughput and predictability.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to design and deliver at least one measurable improvement to infrastructure reliability or observability, with clearly defined success metrics.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience with 5+ years of DevOps/Cloud Engineering, including deep hands‑on expertise in AWS and hybrid (cloud + on‑prem) environments.
- Strong infrastructure engineering fundamentals spanning Linux systems, networking, security, storage, and enterprise application operations.
- Advanced Linux administration and experience operating 3‑tier application architectures, virtualized platforms, and shared storage (e.g., VMware/Proxmox, TrueNAS; HCI a plus).
- Proficiency in containerization and orchestration (Docker, ECS, Swarm) and running container workloads in AWS.
- Strong automation and delivery skills, including Infrastructure‑as‑Code (Terraform), configuration management/scripting (Ansible, Bash, Python), CI/CD pipelines, and observability/incident response tooling.
- Demonstrated cloud security and compliance experience (IAM, encryption, network controls, PCI/SOC2), with working knowledge of core AWS services and platforms (EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, API Gateway, CloudFront); experience with MySQL, RabbitMQ, and AI‑assisted DevOps preferred.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across distributed systems, including root cause analysis for performance, availability, and networking issues.
- Ability to evaluate, adopt, and standardize AI‑assisted DevOps tools to improve operational efficiency, code quality, and security posture.
