Job description

Engineering

Shape the founding practice. Design the firm it becomes.

About Jay.

Jay is a national, attorney-centric, AI-enabled law firm built to serve the people in the middle of the legal market: the tens of millions of households with real legal needs and the means to pay, whose choices today are elite firms built for someone else or form companies that offer documents without counsel. Attorneys are the heart of what we do. AI is how we deliver exceptional service at a price people can afford, and how we free attorneys from the operational work that should have been automated years ago.

We are starting with trusts and estates, but we will not stop there.

Jay is founded by Bob Borek, previously COO and President of Datavant, where he scaled the company from early stage to more than $7 billion in value. Prior to that, he practiced law at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Jay is backed by Travis May, co-founder of LiveRamp and founder of Datavant, and Shaper Capital.

The role.

As a Founding Engineer, you will build the first version of the product, a platform that runs the core operations of a modern law firm. You'll create the tooling that makes a five-person attorney team operate like fifty: intake automation, scheduling, billing, ongoing client communications, document management, and the AI layer threaded through all of it. We're fast-paced, product-driven, and we hire for three traits: smart, nice, and gets things done.

What you’ll do.

  • Build the full platform from scratch, automating the admin work that consumes attorneys' time: intake flows, document generation, matter tracking, billing, and client communications
  • Uphold a high bar for code quality, security, and reliability in an environment where what you build touches sensitive client data and regulated legal work
  • Work directly with attorneys and the Founding Partner to understand requirements and ship the right thing; you are the connection between how law is practiced and how the platform is built
  • Own the technical architecture and make calls that will matter for years: how data is stored and moved, how Jay integrates with legal systems, and how AI is deployed reliably in a regulated environment
  • Lead the design of the AI and LLM layer, including document generation, evaluation frameworks, and the feedback loops that make the system better over time
  • Build the client-facing side: how households find Jay, onboard, and stay engaged over time
Who you are.
  • Strong full-stack engineer who writes clean, maintainable code and gets excited about connecting disparate systems through APIs, webhooks, and data synchronization
  • Scrappy and resourceful: you ship MVPs, gather feedback, and iterate fast. Done is better than perfect. You thrive in ambiguity without detailed specs: talking to users, figuring out what they need, and building it
  • Able to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and translate their needs into working code
  • Energized by the idea of giving ordinary people access to exceptional legal counsel and excited to get in on the ground floor of something significant
  • Great team player who upholds and contributes to a positive and collaborative culture
  • Nice to have: experience with AI/LLM applications, RAG systems, or semantic search; background in law or a regulated industry; previous startup experience
What success looks like — the first year.
  • The core platform is live: real client engagements are running end to end, from intake through document generation and attorney review
  • Key integrations are in production, stable, well-documented, and built to scale
  • The product reflects real attorney and client feedback: you have iterated on what you shipped and it shows
  • The codebase is maintained with an eye towards seamlessly onboarding additional engineers
  • You have helped define what engineering culture at Jay looks like and set the foundation for the team that follows
What we offer.
  • The unique opportunity to build a data company from the ground up.
  • A dynamic, fast-paced environment where your impact is immediate and meaningful.
  • Competitive salary, equity, and benefits package.
  • The chance to work alongside some of the brightest minds in data, venture and entrepreneurship.
Location

Preference for someone based in the Bay Area, but are open to remote for the right person. Regardless of location, the founding team works closely day to day and there will be regular in-person time.
