Job description
Position: Linux Network Engineer
Location: Southfield, MI - Hybrid 3 days onsite
Duration: 12month contract
Pay Range: $45/hr- $55/hr
Insight Global is looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to join one of our global manufacturing and supplier clients. This person will a specialized R&D team that is pioneering high-accuracy micro-location technologies that rely on advanced algorithms to achieve centimeter-level precision. By blending sensor data, RF signals, and cutting-edge signal processing, they are transforming how people and machines navigate their environments.
This person will join a team to tackle complex real-world problems with creativity, collaboration, and a spirit of continuous innovation.
- Develop embedded Linux software that runs on a custom kernel directly on a network switch device
- Build Linux images using Yocto or Buildroot and deploy them to embedded network hardware
- Develop and debug Linux drivers and networking-related software components
- Work at the register level to interface with and control external hardware
- Collaborate closely with hardware engineers to debug system-level issues
- Use oscilloscopes and lab tools to probe boards and diagnose timing and synchronization behavior
- Own assigned workstreams, including task planning, execution, and delivery against timelines
- Support experimentation and rapid iteration in an R&D-style environment
- Contribute to system discussions around timing, synchronization, MAC behavior, and signal integrity
Qualifications:
- Strong experience with Embedded Linux development
- Hands-on experience building and configuring Linux kernels
- Experience using Yocto and/or Buildroot to build embedded Linux images
- Experience working with bootloaders such as U-Boot or RedBoot
- Ability to build and generate bootable images (bootloader, kernel, filesystem, application)
- Proficiency in C and C
- Experience using CMake to build large or complex software projects
- Strong ability to read IC datasheets and work at the register level to control hardware
- Experience developing or debugging Linux drivers and networking-related software
- Exposure to hardware development and lab-based debugging
Nice to Have:
- Experience with Microchip iStaX networking software
- Experience with networking protocols related to timing and synchronization (e.g., gPTP)
- Experience with MAC-layer protocols
- Exposure to RF concepts or signal integrity
- Experience with FreeRTOS or general embedded MCU development
- Experience working with Docker images or containerized build environments
- Experience setting up or supporting CI/CD pipelines for automated builds and releases
- Background in products where timing, synchronization, or precision signaling is critical
**Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education.
