The Patient Care Assistant in the Operating Room (OR) plays a
vital role in supporting surgical teams and ensuring exceptional patient experiences. This role directly impacts patient comfort, safety, and efficient workflow within a dynamic surgical environment. You assist patients before, during, and after surgical procedures, contributing significantly to their well-being and recovery. Your contributions ensure the OR runs smoothly, allowing surgical staff to focus on critical tasks.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides direct patient care, assisting with personal needs and comfort measures.
- Monitors and accurately records vital signs, reporting any changes promptly to nursing staff.
- Assists patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including mobility, hygiene, and feeding.
- Engages in clear and empathetic communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
- Adheres strictly to infection control protocols, maintaining a sterile and safe environment.
- Ensures patient safety by following established procedures and identifying potential risks.
- Maintains accurate and timely documentation of patient observations and care provided.
- Utilizes Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems to access and update patient information.
- Prepares and cleans patient care areas and equipment within the OR.
- Transports patients safely to and from the operating room.
Required Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Completion of a certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program or equivalent medical assistant training.
Experience
- One year of experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in an acute care or surgical environment.
Knowledge/Skills
- Demonstrates proficiency in patient care techniques and compassionate support.
- Possesses strong skills in vital signs monitoring and accurate interpretation.
- Competent in assisting patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).
- Exhibits excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Applies thorough knowledge of infection control practices.
- Holds current CPR Certification and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Maintains meticulous documentation standards.
- Prioritizes and implements patient safety measures consistently.
- Navigates and utilizes Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience specifically within an Operating Room (OR) or surgical services department.
- Additional certifications relevant to patient care or emergency response.
Physical Requirements/Work Conditions
- Stands, walks, and moves frequently for extended periods.
- Lifts, pushes, and pulls patients and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Works in a fast-paced, high-stress environment with exposure to various bodily fluids and infectious diseases.
- Requires manual dexterity, visual acuity, and auditory perception to perform duties safely and effectively.
- Wears personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
