Freelance Writer & Copywriter

Well hello! My name is Annie Hayes. I’m a copywriter, television writer, former English/SAT tutor, and bona fide grammar nerd.
My first professional writing credit was on the show In the Dark, but I’ve been writing stories for as long as I can remember. From the little passages I’d type out on the old typewriters in my parents’ offices, to academic essays, to film and television scripts, I’ve always felt most fulfilled expressing myself through writing.
In copywriting, I’ve found a way to combine all these skills. Screenwriting is all about painting a powerful image as efficiently as possible. Writing flash fiction for my weekly Substack has been a wonderful lesson in concision—how few words can you use to tell a story, convey an idea, provoke an emotion? In television, my job is to mimic the voices of the different characters and the showrunner while still leaving my own creative stamp.
As a copywriter, I have to convey a powerful message quickly and clearly. But it has to be entertaining and persuasive enough to get your customers to click the next link or pick up the phone or get out their credit card. It’s a puzzle. It’s hard, but it’s so fun.
