Composition Faculty; Special Program: JumpStart at College of Eastern Utah (2000-10 – 2002-05)
I taught two regular sections of English 1010 and also taught a program called JumpStart intended to help displaced miners get a solid beginning in college in a flexible format. This was designed to be open entry/open exit, in a mastery-learning format, so that students would be required to have A-level mastery of one benchmark skill before moving on to the next one. Courses included English 1010, English 2010, Math 970, Computer Literacy, and Study Skills.
The program targeted miners who had lost their jobs in mine closures, but it expanded quickly to serve adults from various walks of life. I ran the program in Price and out in Emery County at the CEU satellite campus. It was a great success but unfortunately budget cuts required closure of the program.
