Good Human | Bad Capitalist : Human Focus, Technical Background, Creative Solutions, Rebellious Streak
My purpose in life is to bring joy, ideas, and peace of mind where I can. I've been so fortunate to have had the opportunities I have, and to be involved with such interesting initiatives. It's been difficult to decide which vocation to pursue and I'll admit there have been some false starts. Ultimately, connecting with other humans on a real level is for me what makes life worth living for me. Collaborating on work that makes a difference is the legacy I want to leave.
I can connect with people quickly, but what I've learned and now feel so incredibly strongly about is this: I do not want to leverage that skill to manipulate or sell. I will not leverage my precious relationships for a corporate bottom line. The world needs more humans championing HUMANS. There are enough champions for big business out there.
[More details for the curious…]
Money and finances do not intimidate me and I can synthesize complex ideas into palatable portions for my peers and clients. I passed the SIE, 6, and 63 so I am licensed to sell insurance and to manage investments. My first job out of college, I was selling a financing method for public entities like schools and governments to get the building improvements they so desperately need but can never quite find room in the budget for.
After that, I grew a nascent national database of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) from a static list to a robust automated database with daily data feeds, processing reports, and various enhanced features to make protection of the public and preservation of the credential easy and intuitive.
As I grew my young family, I decided to experience the ultimate professional flexibility and work for myself. Operating my own business as a designer was also a “if I never try this, I'll regret it on my deathbed” move. I partnered with a contractor in town and created the most symbiotic relationship possible until she retired in 2021.
Around that time, I realized I had been leaving money on the proverbial table as a designer by not leaning into the commission structure enough. To me, shopping for furniture based on commissions and not price point, quality, or the environment was not authentic to me. My favorite way to work is economically and with the environment in mind, reusing what clients already have, sourcing second hand… It's the right way in my opinion, but it's not very lucrative.
I can design spaces in my sleep and color, pattern, and texture bring me an inordinate amount of joy so I've been doing interior design for 19 years now.
