Under both companies Catterick Leisure Centre is one of the main Health and Fitness hubs of the surrounding area. Assistant Scientific Officer at Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) (2023-07 – 2025-07)
APHA is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rual Affairs, also working on behalf of the Scottish and Welsh Governments. The Agency works to safeguard animals and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy. Endemic and exotic disease and pests are identified and controlled to benefit the health of the country.
Within the Thirsk site, blood samples from cattle are submitted to be tested for Tuberculosis as part of the Government routine testing, as well as a post mortem room working as a Veterinary Investigation Centre to identify and control new and emerging disease in agricultural livestock.
- Conduct Gamma Interferon testing on cattle blood samples that have been submitted from farms across the country. This is a sandwich ELIZA test, and the various stages are time critical so therefore good time management is a must.
- Keeping the laboratories clean and fully stocked with equipment and consumables.
- Actively monitor stock levels and reorder supplies or make up reagents/consumables when required.
- Trimming of formalin fixed tissues to be sent off for histology processing.
- Be on hand to help within the Postmortem room and Culture Laboratory when the workload deems necessary.
- Complete mandatory learning and training in a timely manner.
