I worked at Sim Metal Management from 2017-2022 and played a big role in 2017-2019 running the 5000 horse power shredder. I performed all maintenance and component replacements. From 2019-2022, I was the Lead Supervisor on the night shift responsible for crew safety and plant operations. I gained extensive experience with machinery maintenance, equipment operation, and crew management across multiple systems including shredders, conveyors, material sorting, and ship loading operations.
- Managed all maintenance and operational tasks for the 5000 horsepower shredder from 2017-2019, including component replacements such as hammers, pins, disc caps, and 916 entry liners
- Executed timely replacement of grates every 5-6 months or after processing one million tons of shred, and adjusted tie rods on the front wall of the shredder
- Performed routine greasing of the feed roll and tightened super bolts on the liner post-installation of new liners
- Operated an overhead crane with a grapple attachment to safely remove obstructions from the feed chute during production
- Acquired cross-training to operate material recycling plant equipment and the Ship Loader
- Supervised the night shift crew for three years (2019-2022), ensuring the safe departure of all personnel after each production run
- Directed the loading of debris onto trucks using a front-end loader, with subsequent processing involving cement and meta-bond
- Oversaw material sorting, ensuring accurate separation of large, medium, small, and extra-small Zorba into designated bunkers, logging material processed by forklift drivers after each shift
- Responded to and reset plant alarms, actively working to maintain continuous operation throughout the night
- Replaced auger jams and repaired broken shaft connections, installing new shaft connections and bolts, and performing welding on auger flights as needed
- Serviced and maintained large machinery including Traumals, Biv-vi-tec, SGM, and Stadler shredders, and replaced grates for Stadler equipment
- Ensured continuous operation of all magnets and rectifiers throughout the night shift
- Executed repairs and replacements of conveyor belts, including patching ripped sections and installing clips or new belts
- Managed the replacement of bearings, tail pulleys, and head pulleys utilizing comalongs
- Proficiently utilized and replaced shackles, slings, keyways, motors, gearboxes, drive belts, and bushings
- Implemented a safety protocol requiring crew signature on a non-routine task form before commencing new projects
- Certified operator for front-end loader, forklift, telehandler, skid steer, man lift, and 840 Sennebogen grapple crane
- Operated a grapple crane in the receiving area to unload vehicle bodies from flatbed trucks

Shredder operator - Schnitzer Steel & Radius Recycling - Oakland

I arrived at Schnitzer Steel as the shredder operator for the night shift and learned the operation of the 10,000 hp mega shredder. I also worked on the shiploader using a Gantray crane. I gained additional experience with a shear and torching area. The mega shredder featured a RTO air system, 2 z-boxes Quality shred line, and infeed systems. I performed welding on feed role teeth and changed infeed plates and rollers.
- Operated the mega shredder with 10,000 hp motor, applying knowledge from previous 5000 hp shredder experience while mastering new design specifications
- Worked on the shiploader at Schnitzer Steel using a Gantray crane with a pan for loading ships larger than previous operations
- Learned to operate the shear on the yard for cutting heavy steel into smaller pieces
- Gained experience in the torching area where heavy steel was cut into smaller pieces and added to the shred pile for shipping
- Operated the mega shredder equipped with 2 z-boxes Quality shred line and RTO air system for emissions control
- Performed maintenance on the shredder including welding teeth for the feed role
- Changed infeed plates and rollers for the infeed system

I was in charge of the trucks dumping wood. I would give inspection and take out all non-wood materials and put them to the side so the loader could push them to the appropriate pile. I ensured everything was clean and processed through the wood chipper.
