Jess Subin Tenhoeve, a recent graduate from Parsons, is a fashion designer and artist based in New York and Los Angeles. Being a twin all her life, it was challenging to part ways and navigate life on her own. She discovered what she loves, experiencing the good and bad, but always finding joy in it.
Jess’ patience and love for making. The satisfaction she feels wearing her garments is something she wants her wearers to experience. Specializing in high-end womenswear, Jess continues to hone her skills in hand-sewing, tailoring, denim-wear, and more. Everyday, she explores new methods to ‘draw’ her imagination, even if it’s not with a pen or pencil.
During my high school career, I started out by doing front receptionist work through the connection of my parents.
I started out in a jewelry store: J Rothstein Jewelers, where I scheduled appointments, welcomed/ helped customers, maintained stock/cleaning, and took errands in Downtown, LA. Later was a front receptionist in a beauty salon called Lash Studio Koreatown. Had similar duties but learned a lot about customer service, management, jewelry/ beauty, etc.
During by college career, I put myself in the retail industry: Reformation and 2nd Street USA. I was able to learn even more about customer service, but the fashion side of it; what people liked/ disliked, etc. During my time in 2nd Street USA, particularly, I learned a lot more about different brands and got to style customers, mannequins, and displays.
Becoming a buyer also helped me learn about profit percentages, negotiating, etc. For fashion design, I was an intern for Clio Galea. It was a smaller business, so being one of three interns, I really got to see every aspect of how a collection is created, promoted, sold, put on the runway, etc.
I fell in love with every part of it. Brainstorming ideas, designing, the making, fittings, photoshoots, BTS fashion show, social media, etc.
I graduated from Beverly Hills High School, Los Angeles, in 2020 with a high school diploma. This year, I have graduated at The New School, in the Parsons School of Fashion department, with a BFA in fashion design. (Class of 2024)
