Founder and Principal Engineer - CanalSense LLC - Grand Junction, CO
(2026-01)
- Wrote the device firmware in bare-metal C on an ARM Cortex-M STM32WL, covering the LoRa radio stack, interrupt-driven sensor acquisition, NOR-flash storage and per-unit provisioning, with a Linux gateway and telemetry path into PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB and Grafana.
- Directed the electronics through three design generations, owning silicon and component selection, the power architecture and the radio front end, consolidating energy conversion, magnetic sensing, storage and wireless onto a single board, and scoping the design for a 100-unit production run.
- Engineered the LoRa telemetry network moving measurement from canal infrastructure to the operator, covering link budgeting and terrain modeling across kilometer-scale spans and node addressing that lets a district run many devices on 0.14 mW each, and secured the receiving infrastructure with encryption and a private network.
- Founded the company and run all operations, covering a $20,000 founder-funded budget, insurance and regulatory compliance, intellectual property, patents, vendor relationships and the engineering program, and hired and manage a team of three including payroll, workers compensation and state reporting.
- Engage irrigation districts and municipal water utilities to evaluate deployment sites and define requirements, secured incubator placement and state enterprise-zone certification, author grant and loan applications, and sponsor a Colorado Mesa University senior design team.
Software Engineer - EchoStar Corporation (DISH Network) - Englewood, CO
(2019-01 - 2022-12)
- Owned embedded software features on Linux-based cable set-top boxes shipped at national and international scale, including a new model brought to market for rural Canadian consumers.
- Architected the state machine for a self-installation feature that retrieves and downloads software from satellite feeds, and built video-on-demand functionality with its interface, menu navigation and input handling.
- Drove releases into production pipelines alongside release engineering, cut and published software labels, ran peer code reviews across the team, and set test definition and tasking for quality assurance and field validation engineers.
- Worked two-week Agile sprints on a cross-functional team, tracking work in Jira, and triaged legacy and high-priority field defects by weighted priority against release deadlines and downstream customer impact.
Electrical Engineering Co-op - Apple Inc. - Cupertino, CA
(2018-06 - 2019-01)
- Owned a data logger board from concept through working hardware, defining the application scope and electrical constraints, selecting the silicon, drawing the schematic, and directing layout with a PCB designer.
- Managed fabrication houses, DFM engineers and component specialists on materials, tolerances and lead times.
- Ran board bring-up and validation, checked power sequencing, host interface controls and power noise across SPI and I2C interfaces, and wrote the firmware that read, wrote and displayed secured data from Apple Watches.
- Appended a feature to power the board and deliver communications over Ethernet on a single cable run to the host.
Electrical Engineering Co-op - Insulet Corporation - Billerica, MA
(2017-06 - 2018-01)
- Built RF test enclosures and stood up a manufacturing test line validating regulated medical devices used to monitor patient glucose, checking vibration, wireless, audio and display quality.
- Assembled the enclosures by hand including crimping, wiring, soldering and mechanical assembly, and conditioned accelerometer signals through data-acquisition hardware.
- Reordered tasks and station placement to raise line throughput, debugged test software alongside contractors, and trained cross-functional groups on device programming for off-site testing.
Manufacturing Engineering Co-op - Mobius Imaging - Shirley, MA
(2016-06 - 2017-01)
- Troubleshot electrical and power faults on a mobile CT scanner on the manufacturing floor, inspecting boards, power modules, controllers and test fixtures inside the machine.
- Worked between manufacturing engineers and floor assembly to resolve faults at the source, and charted the frequency and severity of mis-assemblies and field returns.
- Maintained validation protocols, bills of materials, functional specifications and electrical drawings across subassemblies, and rewrote outdated shop procedures for technicians.
Founder, independent design and engineering practice - RuskinWorks - Grand Junction, CO
(2022-01)
Independent practice taking on contract software development and embedded hardware design for outside clients.
- Delivered UI design for small clients and a mobile lifting jig and controller for single-operator drywall installation.
Office Administration and Reception - Reams & Reams - Grand Junction, CO
(2022-01 - 2026-01)
- Ran front-office operations for a law practice, covering reception and client intake, correspondence and claims, records management and financial recordkeeping.
