Monica has been teaching statistics for over 20 years. She has a passion for teaching and her focus is on Statistics Pedagogical Content Knowledge. Monica has earned two bachelors degrees – one in mathematics and one in education, and two masters degree- one in statistics and one in education. Her Ph.D. investigated “Two-year college mathematics instructors’ conceptions of variation”.
Monica has been awarded two grants for improving the teaching and learning of statistics. A $20,000 grant from College of the Canyons and a $571000 grant National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for her project TANGO STAT ED (Training a New Generation of Statistics Educators), which aims to aid professors at two-year colleges teaching statistics.
Monica has worked several years on statistics analysis and reports for education research projects at UCSB and at SBCC. The Youth Enrichment adventure Program (YEA) at UCSB and The College Achievement Program (CAP) at SBCC. She also consulted and guided the statistics processes of several PhD dissertations.
She has been feature in the AMSTATS news in the ASA president corner. The article title is called How a Salsa-Dancing Former Monk from Argentina Is Instilling Confidence and Wonder in Her Statistics Students
She has given presentations at several international conferences like the ICME (International Conference for Mathematics Education), the JSM (Joint Statistical Meeting), ICOTS (International Conference on Teaching Statistics) and the CMC3 South and North. She currently teaches at California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI).
On the fun side, Monica loves salsa dancing, tango and traveling.
