Extended Reach Drilling (ERD)Unconventional Well DeliveryRotary Steerable Systems (RSS)

About

Senior Drilling Engineer with 28 years of international experience spanning deepwater (DW), extended reach drilling (ERD), high-pressure/high-temperature (HPHT), and unconventional well delivery across the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, Africa, and Europe. Proven track record of leading high-performing engineering teams, driving NPT reduction, and executing complex multi-rig projects for national oil companies and international operators. Deep expertise in well engineering, BHA and bit optimisation, rotary steerable systems, drilling tools, and directional drilling.

Co-authored 12 SPE/ADIPEC technical papers, including landmark contributions to ERD, deepwater, HPHT, and unconventional well campaigns that have set industry-record performance benchmarks. Successfully grew a drilling engineering team from 3 to 9 engineers and supported portfolios of up to 71 simultaneous rigs across multiple geographies.

Experience

Principal Drilling Engineer — Regional MENA & Asia - SLB (Schlumberger) - Abu Dhabi, UAE

(2022-05 - 2025-03)

  • Provided regional drilling engineering support for ADNOC and international operator projects across UAE, Malaysia, Brunei, and Thailand.
  • Scaled the drilling engineering team from 3 to 9 engineers to support ADNOC's enlarged portfolio: >25 onshore rigs, 10 offshore rigs, and 2 island ERD rigs.
  • Technically supported Shell's deepwater GKGJE development (1,200 m water depth, Malaysia–Brunei border); 3 producer wells and 1 water injection well via subsea tie-back.
  • Supported PTTEP deepwater exploration, Hibiscus ERD project (Malaysia), PTTEP land/offshore drilling, and CPOC high-temperature project (Thailand).
  • Led drilling engineering for ADNOC Upper Zakum Island ERD programme and the ADNOC Turn unconventional project (8 rigs).
  • Achieved sub-20-day well delivery on Turn wells through BHA optimisation, fit-for-purpose RSS selection, advanced bit design, and motor-assisted RSS configurations.
  • Deployed downhole data loggers to characterise drilling dynamics, enabling optimised bit/BHA per formation — significantly reducing RSS/MWD tool failures and NPT, and improving dogleg delivery.

Principal Drilling Engineer — Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - SLB (Schlumberger) - Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

(2018-04 - 2022-04)

  • Led NPT reduction initiatives across 21 active rigs for deep gas and oil wells, plus 50 legacy rigs — NPT being the primary Aramco rig market-share criterion.
  • Introduced PowerDrive Orbit G2 RSS for harsh-formation carbonate drilling, delivering assured dogleg severity and material NPT reduction across multiple wells.
  • Deployed NeoSteer At-Bit RSS for Jafura unconventional wells, achieving the highest ROP on record and minimising NPT.
  • Implemented Drilling Mode survey technology with engineered MWD collar design to counter high dynamics in 8½″ vertical sections, enabling single-run section delivery at optimum ROP.
  • Championed digital transformation: built predictive maintenance workflows from tool-dump analysis; implemented DrillPlan and DrillOps for real-time performance monitoring; led Auto-Curve RSS introduction; established RTOC workflow using TechLog drilling interpretation for offset-well correlation.
  • Served as cross-business-line focal point between Drilling and Completion teams to ensure planned open-hole and cased-hole completion depths were engineered and achieved to design.

Drilling Optimization Group Lead - SLB (Schlumberger) - Saudi Arabia

(2014-05 - 2018-03)

  • Delivered technical advisory support during well execution; real-time root-cause analysis for drilling issues and compiled structured lessons for future well planning cycles.
  • Owned the SQ issue register — ensured all surface and downhole quality events carried remedial action plans tracked to verified closure.
  • Co-authored 4 SPE papers with Aramco counterparts covering: shocks & vibration mitigation in carbonate reservoirs, deep gas lateral optimisation, innovative geo-steering with bed-boundary mapping, and drilling efficiency for medium-radius re-entry deep gas wells.
  • Coordinated post-well reviews and continuous improvement loops across complex multi-rig programmes.

Drilling Engineering Manager — SE Asia - SLB (Schlumberger) - Bangkok, Thailand

(2010-07 - 2014-04)

  • Managed the drilling engineering function for SE Asia: design quality, standards compliance, and professional development of all drilling engineers.
  • Conducted technical audits, pre-drilling reviews, and post-well evaluations; introduced cost-effective new techniques across the portfolio.
  • Vietnam: ERD wells for CLIOC, BP, VSP, JVPC, Idemitsu, and Petronas Carigali.
  • Thailand: Technical support across PTTEP (6 rigs, offshore and land), Salamander (Bou Long field), Coastal Energy, and Mubadala/Pearl Energy (Gulf of Thailand).
  • Myanmar: Daewoo gas-field development; PTTEP 42-well project; 2 deepwater wells offshore Myanmar; Total development programme; Chinery Oil 4-well offshore exploration campaign.

Senior Drilling Engineer & DE Lead - SLB (Schlumberger) - Shekou (Shenzhen), China

(2006-09 - 2010-06)

  • Deepwater: Husky Liwan field, Devon South China Sea, Jamstec (Japan).
  • ERD: CACT HZ field, CNOOC Liu Hua field, ConocoPhillips Xijiang field.
  • Led ERD strategy and technology deployment across the South China Sea.
  • Co-authored SPE-134949 on the HZ 25-4 ERD project — new strategy and technology implementation.

Drilling Engineer - SLB (Schlumberger) - Khartoum, Sudan

(2006-01 - 2006-08)

  • Horizontal well campaign and performance drilling for Petronas, CNPC, and GNPOC.
  • Introduced RSS tool PDX5, achieving smoother well profiles, improved casing running, and ahead-of-schedule well delivery.

Senior Directional Driller / RSS PowerDrive Engineer - SLB (Schlumberger) - Egypt & Sudan

(2001-06 - 2005-12)

  • Lead directional driller on crowded Gulf of Suez platforms with complex anti-collision requirements and stringent tolerance windows.
  • Drilled hook-shaped, deep kick-off, open-hole/cased-hole sidetrack, and high-angle slant wells with long tangent sections using motors with under-gauge agitators prior to RSS introduction.

Data / Pressure Engineer - Baker Hughes - Qatar, Oman & Pakistan

(1997-01 - 2001-05)

  • Led mud-logging teams at drilling locations; monitored drilling activity and compiled geological and engineering data for operator representatives.
  • Performed wireline-log correlation, drilling and pressure data analysis, and daily reporting to operator geological and drilling teams.
  • Ran EMS (Electronic Multi-Shot) surveys and presented technical results to client engineering staff.

Junior Geophysicist - OGDCL (Pakistan) - Pakistan

(1995-01 - 1996-12)
