I spent many years of my working life in a financial environment which required extreme organisation and being able to cope in pressurised situations. This has equipped me with many transferable skills which I was able to use in my nursing and I also use these currently. Working as a health care assistant in a hospital gave me a good basic foundation of knowledge as to how people are cared for in hospital, this was invaluable in preparing me for my nurse training.
I had many placement experiences in the acute setting and also had placements in a nursing home and intermediate care home. Other placements included spending time with the discharge planning team, stoma nurse, continence nurse, rapid response, pharmacy, district nursing team and practice nurse, all giving me an insight into other aspects of community nursing care and how this care impacts on patients recently discharged from hospital. Team work is essential in providing efficient care to clients, and I have proven to be a good team player both in previous and current employments as well as part of my nurse and health visitor training.
I am able to build friendships and work with others and am aware that information should be shared with, for example, the multi disciplinary team to enable effective team work. I am also able to successfully work autonomously. I have excellent communication skills, these skills have been gained from previous employments and experiences, without these I would not have been able to progress within my previous career paths.
These skills also enable me to communicate with clients, other staff members, family of clients, members of the public. My current position relies on effective communication.
