School Bus Driver - Student Transportation of America - Grand Junction, CO 81501
(2015-07 - 2017-12)
Safely transport students to and from school and events, drive charter trips for events, perform daily safety inspections to ensure that the bus is in safe working order and is clean. In this position, I created and maintained a passenger manifest for students who rode my bus. I also maintained discipline on the school bus and kept it clean.
I also ensured that it was in good repair. In this position, I also had to maintain constant vigilance while driving, loading, and unloading students, to ensure safety. This job required that I make quick decisions based on my knowledge, training, and observation skills.
While at this job, I also traveled to Omaha, Nebraska to help fill in for a driver's shortage. While there, I was given route instructions on paper, and soon realized that attempting to follow written route instructions on unfamiliar roads was extremely dangerous to myself, my passengers, and the public. Transport diverted SkyWest Airline passengers from Walker Field Airport to Aspen-Pitkin Airport (KASE). This position required me to remain on-call and respond within 30 minutes to the gate at Walker Airport in Grand Junction, go through TSA inspection in my bus and drive up to the airplane on the flight deck to pick up passengers directly from the airplane. I then drove non-stop (due to TSA regulations) to Aspen Airport.
At times, I also transported checked baggage within the locked baggage compartment on my bus. When I was carrying baggage, after unloading passengers, I would be escorted onto the tarmac at KASE so that baggage handlers could check and offload my cargo, and on one occasion when the airport was short-staffed, I had to help the airport director offload this luggage myself. This job required me to drive when weather conditions at KASE prevented planes from safely landing there, resulting in the flight being diverted to Grand Junction airport.
I therefore had to drive in various weather conditions, including heavy snow and high winds. It also required me to have a basic knowledge of Transportation Safety Administration regulations and follow those regulations.
