Nelson Hemmert

My name is Nelson Jack Hemmert. I am an upcoming graduate majoring in political science at the University of San Diego. I was born and raised in Sacramento, California.

After seeing and being a part of the hardships facing underrepresented communities of the Sacramento area, my passion for policy and grassroots organizing was ignited. I wanted to represent these communities I was a part of and give a voice to the people. Foster equity and justice in my community through opportunities like I was given by football to pursue an education at a great university and to succeed.

This passion of mine was the driving force behind my time in Assemblymember Bryan’s office. Where I was able to learn the legislative process while advancing progressive and effective policies in the State of California. I was actually able to work on three bills that eventually were signed into law by the governor and two of the bills advanced the lives of workers and the working class.

AB 1269, AB 246and AB 247. I was able to focus more closely with constituent outreach and community organizing with my time in Congressman Scott Peters office in San Diego.

Also this past year, my school's Non-tenure track faculty started the first ever union at the university of San Diego through SEIU 721. I was proud to stand in solidarity and help in their cause in any way possible. I was canvassing and collecting student signatures.

I organized a student-led march across campus to the president's office to deliver all the signatures to show student support for the union. The union reached its first contract after a two day unfair labor practice strike which included things like, a new base wage scale with pay increases and 10% cancellation fees for faculty who have had their expected units cut down, and classroom environment safety provisions.

Now it’s time to put in that same work for the people and all of those who sacrificed for me to be here today.

Manager at Next Level Sports LLC (2020-01 – 2022-03)

• Oversaw youth sports operations (40+ Teams and 400+ Families), managed coaches and referees schedules, lead payroll processing for employees, managed game schedules and team rosters, coached and lead multiple teams and age groups.

Student Intern at California State Senate President pro Tempore Emeritus, Sen. Toni G. Atkins (CA-39) (2024-07 – 2024-08)

• Shadowed Senator Toni G. Atkins, Attended legislation and policy briefing meetings, Senate and Assembly committee hearings, Senate and Assembly floor sessions.

Congressional Intern at U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Scott Peters (CA-50) (2025-02 – 2025-04)

• Worked as a congressional intern inside Rep. Peters's district office where I conducted research, helped with constituent casework, attended events with the congressman, conducted constituent outreach, answered phone calls and completed daily office duties.

Legislative Intern at California State Assembly, Assemblymember Isaac G. Bryan (AD-55) (2025-06 – 2025-08)

• Served as a legislative intern in Assembly member Bryan's Capitol office through the California Legislative Black Staffers Association. Assisted in staffing legislation, drafting bill proposals and recommendations, writing talking points, briefing notes, and official letters. Prepared adjournments in memory, conducted vote counts, and supported the Member's legislative agenda.
• Additionally answered phone calls and completed daily office duties.

Defensive Lineman, Pioneer Football League (PFL) Men's Division I Football at University of San Diego (2022-08 – Present)

• Effectively managed a college course load in addition to team responsibilities of 20+ hours per week, Pioneer Football League Academic Honor Roll, developed a work ethic and teamwork skills by dedicating time to practice, training, and athletic competition, learned skills of responsibility and having a role on a team, recognized with Scholar-Athlete honors for dedication and leadership.
