Riley Hammack

I am a passionate Environmental Studies major pursuing my Bachelor's degree from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. While at Petaluma High School, I worked as a student-led docent at The Petaluma Wildlife Museum. I led tours to thousands of children annually, educating them on environmental conservation and practical preservation.

I am an alumnus of the program and continue to visit the museum to teach future docents public speaking skills and exotic animal handling. I was one of the youngest students to receive the title of Lead Docent due to my advanced educational skills with children, teaching complex topics relating to threats to global biodiversity. I also led virtual tours during the pandemic's peak, including an animal ambassador spotlight for the San Jose Reptile Expo.

In addition, I volunteered with Friends of the Petaluma River to restore aquatic habitats and remove debris from Petaluma rivers during my off time. Thanks to my continuing studies at WWU, I was recently selected for an internship at The New England Aquarium as a Conservation Learning Team Member. I enjoy being a student at Western Washington University and plan to continue my studies of the environment far into the future.

• Developing and presenting lessons on marine topics, including heatwaves, Alaska snow crab population loss, and environmental policy.
• Assisting in group discussions, grading, and class participation.

The New England Aquarium Conservation Learning Intern

• Collaborated with marine biology experts on current sustainability policies and practices relating to the Northern Atlantic.
• Developed a lesson plan on shark conservation through extensive research using the New England Aquarium's resources.
• Enhanced my public speaking skills by giving daily presentations, monitoring exhibits, and encouraging visitor safety.

Western Washington University - Lucy Caples Summer Camp Coordinator

• Promoted from counselor to coordinator within one year.
• Developed innovative programming, activities, and lessons within budget and time restrictions.
• Implemented a comprehensive staff training program, resulting in a more knowledgeable and prepared team, and currently assisting with future hires.
