I am a retired US Navy Senior Chief who served proudly for 26 years onboard Nuclear Aircraft Carriers. My NEC (Navy Classification Code) was Fire Control. Unless familiar, most think that I was a fire fighter, but my job was actually to start them.
That's right…I maintained and operated the Ships Self Defense Systems to include short- and long-range gun and guide missile systems. As a Fire Controlman, I got to blow stuff up which was very cool. I was initially trained for over two years in the Navy's selective and academically arduous Advanced Electronics Computer Field where I studied radar and RF principles, digital theory, synchros & servos, hydraulics, pneumatics, and communications just to name a few.
I served as a technician responsible for the maintenance and operation of those highly complex systems eventually promoting in pay grade and managing the younger techs. I held various roles of leadership over the years, and one of my highlights was being selected the US Navy Senior Enlisted Academy where I studied business management and leadership. I also graduated from Excelsior University with an AS in Electromechanical Technology.
I retired from Active Duty in 2014 and went directly to work for Hutington-Ingalls Industries (Newport News Shipbuilding) in the Electronics Test department. I now had the opportunity to build the very same ships I once served on which has been awesome. I started out as an Electronics Engineering Technician III, and within two years qualified as Lead Test Engineer, and eventually promoted to the role of Chief Test Engineer on board the Navy's newest Carrier USS Gerald R.
Ford CVN79. I have decided to leave the shipyard with a heavy heart because I truly enjoyed the job, but my Wife and I are moving back to Southeastern N.C. (Lumberton) so we can be closer to family. I love to build, fish and fix things, and I consider myself a jack of all trades and a master of none, but with an eagerness to always learn.
Retired from the US Navy after 26 years with an Honorable Discharge in 2014. I was an Electronics Technician eventually promoting in paygrade to Senior Chief Petty Officer (E8). I have been employed by Huntington-Ingalls Industries at Newport News Shipbuilding since retiring from the Navy.
I was hired as an Electronics Engineering Tech III. I qualified as a Lead Test Engineer in 2018 and was eventually promoted to Engineer III. I was responsible for the installation and testing of all electronics systems on US Navy Nuclear Aircraft Carriers.
I graduated from Excelsior University (Albany NY) in 2007 with an AS in Electromechanical Technology. I am also a Graduate of the US Navy Senior Enlisted Academy, Newport, RI.
