Senior Full Stack Developer (Node.js / JavaScript)
Job description
Brownie Points is looking for an experienced Senior Full Stack Product Engineer to join our small, high-impact technology team.
We build technology that helps organisations manage teams, operations and programmes while tracking performance, participation and impact. Our platforms support nonprofits, SMMEs and large-scale public employment and social impact programmes across South Africa.
As our products and client base grow, we're expanding our engineering capacity to give the team greater depth, resilience and room to build well.
We're looking for someone technically strong, pragmatic and comfortable taking genuine ownership of production software - from understanding the user problem through to development, deployment and ongoing reliability.
What you'll do
- Build, maintain and improve production applications across the full stack.
- Develop backend services and APIs using Node.js.
- Build and improve modern JavaScript frontend applications.
- Work with databases, integrations and third-party services.
- Deploy, monitor and maintain applications and services on AWS.
- Investigate, troubleshoot and resolve production issues.
- Take features from problem definition through UX thinking, development, testing and deployment.
- Improve code quality, testing, documentation and long-term maintainability.
- Work closely with our CTO, product and operational teams.
- Independently manage priorities, deliverables and commitments while keeping the team informed.
- Support critical production incidents when required, including occasional after-hours emergency support.
What we're looking for
Essential
- 6+ years of professional software development experience, or demonstrably equivalent senior-level capability.
- Deep professional experience with Node.js.
- Excellent JavaScript and/or TypeScript skills.
- Strong experience building and maintaining real production applications.
- Solid knowledge of REST APIs, databases and integrations.
- Confidence working across backend and frontend systems.
- Good UX judgement and experience building user-facing products.
- Strong Git, debugging and modern development workflow experience.
- Experience deploying, monitoring and troubleshooting production systems.
- Strong ownership, self-management and dependable follow-through.
- Clear, proactive communication and a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
- Reliable availability and responsiveness during agreed working hours.
Highly advantageous
- AWS, CI/CD and cloud infrastructure.
- Modern JavaScript frontend frameworks.
- SQL/PostgreSQL and NoSQL databases.
- Multi-tenant SaaS and data-heavy applications.
- Third-party API integrations.
- Monitoring, logging and incident management.
- AI-assisted software development tools.
- Experience in startups or small product teams.
You can enter an existing codebase, understand how it works and improve it pragmatically rather than immediately wanting to rebuild it.
You manage yourself effectively, communicate proactively, raise risks early and take responsibility for delivering quality work.
You care about the people using the software, collaborate respectfully and share knowledge openly with teammates.
You'll have meaningful responsibility and the opportunity to help shape Brownie Points' technology as the company scales.
Employment type: Initial 3-month, part-time contract, with the potential to transition into a permanent, full-time position. We're looking to build a long-term relationship with the right person. The initial engagement will provide an opportunity for both parties to establish a productive working relationship, assess technical and team fit, and determine the best longer-term arrangement.
Location: Cape Town candidates are strongly preferred.
Compensation: Competitive and dependent on experience.
