Software Engineer (Full Stack, Backend-leaning)
Location: Cape Town, South Africa (Remote) About Yonda
Yonda is a fast-growing fintech company helping businesses automate global tax compliance (sales tax, VAT, GST). We combine software with deep tax expertise to simplify complex, high-volume workflows for eCommerce and SaaS businesses. We’re building a modern, API-first platform that integrates directly into our customers’ systems and we’re scaling our engineering team to support this next phase. The Role
We’re hiring a backend-leaning full stack engineer to help build and scale our core platform particularly our client-facing APIs and internal/external portals.
This is a hands-on role where you’ll ship production code quickly, work across the stack, and contribute to real systems used by real customers every day. What You’ll Be Doing
Build and scale client-facing APIs powering integrations with our tax engine
Develop features across our client and operations portals (React + TypeScript)
Write clean, maintainable Python backend services
Collaborate closely with product and engineering to ship high-impact features
Participate in code reviews with a focus on quality and long-term maintainability
Use AI coding tools (e.g. Cursor, Claude Code, Codex) effectively as part of your workflow
Contribute to architecture decisions as we evolve our platform
Help improve engineering standards and best practices What We’re Looking For
Must-have
Strong Python backend experience (you can independently build and own services)
Solid React + TypeScript skills (able to ship features end-to-end)
Experience building and shipping production APIs for external users
Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools in day-to-day work
Experience working in startup or scale-up environments Nice-to-have
Experience in fintech, regtech, or compliance-heavy systems
Exposure to rule-based or event-driven systems
Familiarity with data pipelines, rate limiting, or large-scale processing
Experience building tools for non-technical users What Makes Someone Successful Here
