Planning, building and maintaining fibre optic networks - overhead and core
- Install fibre drop cables from the distribution point to the customer's premises.
- Test newly installed lines to confirm signal strength and speed.
- Identify faults in fibre networks, ONTs, connectors, or distribution points.
- Use OTDR, power meters, and light source testers to locate breaks or weak signal points.
- Replace damaged connectors, drop cables, or customer-end equipment.
- Resolve intermittent connectivity issues and low-speed complaints.
- Perform scheduled maintenance on fibre distribution points.
- Inspect and clean connectors, splices, and enclosures.
- Repair broken fibre lines caused by weather, animals, or construction damage.
- Re-route or upgrade existing fibre lines where necessary.
- Communicate clearly with customers about installation expectations and timelines.
- Explain how to use ONTs, routers, and Wi-Fi settings.
- Provide guidance on optimal router placement for coverage.
- Gather customer feedback and ensure service satisfaction before leaving the site.
- Record installation details, signal readings, ONT serial numbers, and location notes.
- Update job sheets, mobile apps, or CRM systems with completed work.
- Report complex faults or network-side issues to the Network Operations Centre (NOC).
- Maintain accurate stock records of connectors, drop cables, splicing sleeves, etc.
- Adhere to PPE and safety standards when working at heights or with tools.
- Follow fibre-handling procedures to prevent damage or contamination.
- Ensure installations comply with company quality and national fibre standards.
- Keep work areas clean and safe before, during, and after installations.
