I’m Britney Mokoena, 26 years old, and a qualified Nature Conservationist with a Diploma from Tshwane University of Technology, completed in 2022.
My career has been built in the field, working directly with wildlife and reserve operations across South Africa. I started with a 6-week volunteer placement at Artherstone Nature Reserve while waiting for my work integrated learning placement, then completed my Work Integrated Learning at Monate Private Game Reserve. There I gained hands-on experience in animal health and welfare, brown hyaena monitoring, vegetation surveys, cheetah capture and translocation, law enforcement, and general reserve management.
In 2024, I joined Ferroland Exxaro Manketti Game Reserve as an intern. My role expanded to include rhino husbandry, alien invasive species control, game capture and transport, biodiversity monitoring, habitat restoration, wetland rehabilitation, and staff supervision. I’ve also worked closely with Grootegeluk Mine to help implement conservation laws on the reserve, and I regularly analyze data from camera traps and field surveys to inform management decisions.
Across all these roles, I’ve been involved in the full cycle of reserve work: from field data collection and report writing, to infrastructure and fence maintenance, to enforcing conservation laws and supporting community engagement. I’m comfortable managing teams, planning daily operations, and stepping in to run the reserve when necessary.
