Working at Sasol Petrochemical and Sasol Mining as an integrated oil and gas company with sustainable chemical interests is always challenging, and since I started working between departments, I have used my talents in applying unique, innovative systems to focus on human behaviour, help identify key risks/opportunities in a timely manner, and support management actions and strategies. I identified our key safety, health and environmental risks based on proper internal risk assessments conducted by management in consultation with our operations. Project successes included achieving a record number of work hours without lost-time accidents or fatalities.
Management consistently responded positively to regulatory and corporate governance compliance, and to maintaining the company's freedom of action at chemical plants and units.
We, as leaders, were able to predict a safety culture at that time and continuously focus on good safety outcomes and advocate for proper and complete documentation, inspections, and equipment.
All my successes have to do with teams and without teams (people) it is impossible to achieve any successes. With this system, all managers, including management, communicate to change and commit to zero tolerance, for example: Senior management personally conducts sufficient communication; develops written materials to explain changes in process; minimises significant changes between teams; dramatically reduces all incidents/accidents; easily identifies system changes; continuously reviews and updates risk management processes; minimises response time to common problems between units and the organisation; aligns our operational goals; increases production and with this culture change we can easily identify the problems and then provide appropriate leadership coaching at all levels.
