My name is Deon van Staden and I am 36 year old. I have been working in the mechanical industry since the age of 16 years old. I got the first chance to work on the Engen Refinery in Durban with my father in my matric year in 2003 on a shutdown. The requirements of the shutdown were the removal of valves and pumps and then the reconditioning of the equipment at the onsite workshops.
We moved to Cape Town and I started work on the Group Five Oil and Gas at the Cape Town Refinery. I got a job as safety watcher that required me to help with the assessments and the safety precautions of work that was done onsite and worked closely with the health and safety manager. Because of the close relations we had with different departments I managed to get a apprenticeship with the electrical department and started training under Victor Boshoff.
He was an electrician and air-conditioning technician. We were responsible for all the maintenance, servicing and the repairs of all the cooling and air-conditioning systems onsite. Before I could complete my training I was unfortunately retrenched in 2010.
I fell in love with the air-conditioning and refrigeration trade and managed to find a job and apprenticeship with ColdFact Projects. There I managed to qualify and receive my red seal as a refrigeration mechanic. I have worked on different air-conditioning & refrigeration systems as listed on my cv. I also managed my own sites and I was regularly sent to work away on sites. I had to order equipment and spares, install and commission the systems.

I have done installations, maintenance, fault finding service and repairs. I also had to do stock maintenance of the vehicle stock, stock maintenance with client, issuing order numbers and site managing with regular progress reports and meetings between myself and clients.
