Translator, editor and interpreter
I have completed both my Bachelor's and Honors degrees, and I'm currently busy with my Master's in Translation Studies. Most of my attention has been on my studies, however, I have worked as a translator and editor for I Learn Through Play for three years. The work was remote, with the employer giving me free rein over my work schedule.
The translation and editing work were mostly for a child or toddler audience, though some work was also done for an adult audience, specifically the parents who bought the workbook series. I further worked as a freelance translator for CCCI, wherein I translated a Japanese manga series from English to Afrikaans. I have a great love for languages and how individuals can use language to navigate and enhance the world around them.
My interest in the field of translation is mostly non-professional translation and intersemiotic translation with a focus on multimodality and social semiotics.
Freelance Translator - I Learn Through Play
(2022-01 - 2025-01)
I Learn Through Play is a toddler workbook series aimed at ages 0 - 6 years. The workbook series was originally only available in Afrikaans. My job was to translate all the workbooks and any other documentation, such as advertisements, from Afrikaans to English. As all the documents and books used and sold by I Learn Through Play have been successfully translated, my continued employment was no longer needed.
Freelance Editor - I Learn Through Play
(2022-01 - 2025-01)
While working as a translator for I Learn Through Play, I also worked as their editor. The editing work entailed editing all Afrikaans texts in the workbook series, as well as editing and finding better images used in the worksheets of the workbook series. At times, the editing also entailed completely changing worksheets as per request from my employer.
As all the documents and books used and sold by I Learn Through Play have been successfully edited, my continued employment is no longer needed.
Freelance translator - CCCI
(2024-10 - 2025-11)
I was contracted as an Afrikaans Freelance Translator for CCCI, wherein I translated a manga series from English into Afrikaans. I had a weekly deadline wherein three chapters had to be translated and localized for my target audience. The translation process included a lot of layout management due to the restrictive nature of text boxes within visual novels. This type of translation taught me various new skills regarding the translation of multimedia products.
