I worked for Transnet for 30 years, I started in 1987 as an Electrical Apprentice. Once I qualified I worked as a New Works Electrician. I then completed my national service. On my return I worked as a maintenance Electrician.
I then qualified as an Air conditioning and Refrigeration Technician. I was then promoted to Technical Supervisor Air conditioning and Refrigeration and Electrical, managing 30 staff which serviced 141 Siveright Street (Transnet’s main Data Centre) amongst various others. I was then promoted to Property technical (Maintenance/Facilities supervisor), Technical Advisor contracts (Air conditioning Refrigeration and electrical) where I project managed contracts (Building maintenance and repairs as well as complete new buildings), compiling specifications and scope of work, setting up the bill of quantities, going out on tender, chairing site meetings, evaluating tenders, awarding contracts and project managing the project from inception to completion.
During this time I familiarized myself with all other trades, I was also responsible to make sure the contractors complies with Nosa (Health and safety).
